You're right: being an expert doesn't mean being the best. There are a lot of experts in every field.

I'm not an expert in anything, except maybe dealing with people who are in trouble. Generally, I have poor social skills. I keep to myself, mostly, but if someone is in trouble and other people can't reach them, I seem to do the trick.

Years ago I used to volunteer at a neighborhood outreach. Whenever someone came in who was a little off kilter--that is, not exactly dealing with reality--I was the one who could reach them, calm them down and find out what they needed. It was my specialty. Odd specialty, isn't it?

That's a good quality, not for yourself but for the others, a sort of advanced empathy! Being a volunteer and the only one calming people and straight them up is an expertise too
