Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this. I use Python with beem (by @holger80) in a script to generate what you see here. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

Those based in the UK can use the #teamuk tag for an extra vote. If you see people using it on non-relevant posts then drop them a friendly comment to point out that is not encouraged.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version.

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

• Active as above.
• Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
• Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile.

Commentary

The number of active people has dropped again, but then in the two years that I have been generating this report it has more than doubled. We hit a peak of 250 earlier this year and it would be great to get up there again. We are not getting huge numbers of new accounts, but some old ones have stopped using Hive at all. I wonder how many of them still have some funds on here. That is another report I could generate. People could at least set up some automatic votes, perhaps following @tenkminnows so that they contribute to spreading rewards whilst still earning. If you do not know how to do this then give me a shout.

I know a lot of people are considering whether to keep using Twitter. Hive is not primarily a short-form platform, but it does have options for doing that. Meanwhile Mastodon is seeing a bit uptick in new accounts. It has some good features, but I do not think it has sustainable ways to fund running the nodes and if a node shuts down then people lose their accounts.

There have to be reasons for people to keep using Hive. For many the rewards will not be huge, but if there were more ways to spend them directly then that could help and some will not have an easy route to get fiat (£ for the Brits). It also needs to be fun as that is what keeps them on platforms that do not pay. That can mean having a large enough audience who enjoys the same things and Hive is tiny compared to many others. There are Facebook groups bigger than the active user-base on Hive.

I do what I can through promoting what others doing and trying to build communities, but we each need to do something if we want Hive to thrive. You cannot just expect your rewards to grow otherwise.

Meetups

I am not aware of any UK meetups that are planned, but there has been talk of one in London. Let me know if you are doing anything and I will promote it. It does not have to be anything major. Just arranging to meet in a pub can be productive. Whenever Hivers get together good things happen.
