My participation in the Reflection Hunters Contest - #SMARP round #259: Spring 2026 postcards [Eng/Esp]
Happy Saturday Shadow Hunters community! It's not always possible to see the reflection in the photo I'm showing you for this #SMARP round 259, and yes, you might think this is just a swimming pool filled with water that hasn't been changed in weeks. But the truth is, this is the remnant of what was meant to be a swimming pool, but never was. This sort of summer house was never finished in the 1950s and was taken over by the University during those years of dictatorship and converted into a research center. Since then, that pool has been empty, containing only enough water to keep our pet caiban, "Babushka," hydrated. However, in 2024, something unusual happened: the water valves broke, flooding the school's green spaces, including the pool! This allowed us to witness something unprecedented: the pool completely full, and yes, our greatest fear materialized—Babushka almost climbing out of the pool!
Well, that was almost two years ago! Due to the crisis that has now escalated into a military intervention in Venezuela, many maintenance services at the school have ceased, and, well, the inevitable happened: the pool flooded again because the replacement pipe that had been installed previously broke. The good news was that the floodwaters didn't rise above the pool's surface, so Babushka couldn't get out. This allowed us to work more calmly and begin the process of dredging the pool. The interesting thing is that I was one of the first to arrive at the institute and had the unique opportunity to photograph the pool and the water feature that was created, which I wanted to share with you for this week's SMARP.
The water leak wasn't too severe because when we left last weekend, none of the workers came back to check on the slight break in the main pipe. So, when I arrived, what I saw was this partial reflecting pool because over the weekend, duckweed, a type of aquatic plant that tends to eutrophicate lakes and ponds, had grown. This prevented a wider, clearer reflection, but since it formed naturally, I think it adds a certain charm to the image.
A short time later, the university workers arrived, and with the help of the town hall, they managed to dredge the pool. Our pet was in the deepest part, where most of the sediment and mud had settled. It was covered in mud, but it seemed happy; I suppose it was somehow mimicking its state in the wild. Feliz sábado comunidad de Shadow Hunters! No siempre es posible comtemplar el reflejo generado en la fotografía que te estoy mostrando para este #SMARP round 259, y si, puedes pensar que esta es una simple piscina llena de agua con semanas sin haber sido cambiada en semanas. Pero la realidad es que este es el vestigio de lo que eventualmente sería una piscina y nunca llegó a serlo porque originalmente esta especie de casa de veraneo nunca se terminó de construir en los años cincuenta y fue tomado por la Universidad en aquellos años de dictadura y reconvertido en un centro de investigación. Desde entonces esa piscina ha estado vacía con una cantidad de agua basal para mantener el caiban que tenemos de mascota, "babushka" hidratada. Sin embargo desde el 2024 sucedió algo singular las llaves de paso de agua se rompieron inundando los espacios verdes del instituto, incluyendo la piscina! Esto nos permitió ver un evento nunca antes visto, ver la piscina completamente llena y si, nuestro mayor temor se materializó, ver a babushka casi salir de la piscina!
Bueno, eso fue hace casi ya 2 años! Debido a la crisis que ahora ha derivado en una agresión militar en Venezuela, muchos de los servicios de mantenimiento en el instituto han cesado y bueno, paso lo inevitable, se volvió a inundar las piscina por la rotura del tubo de repuesto que se había colocado anteriormente. Lo bueno fue que la inundación no sobrepasó la piscina asi que babushka no pudo salir de la piscina, eso nos permitió trabajar más tranquilos y comenzar el proceso de dragado de la piscina. Lo interesante es que yo fui de los primeros en llegar al instituto y tuve la oportunidad única de fotografíar la piscina y el espejo de agua que se genero y que he querido traerte para el SMARP de esta semana.
El bote de agua no fue tan severo ya que cuando nos fuimos el fin de semana pasado, nadie de los obreros volvió para darse cuenta que había una ligera rotura de la tubería principal. Entonces, cuando llegué lo que vi fue este espejo de agua parcial porque a lo largo del fin de semana había crecido lemna una especie de planta acuática que tiende a eutrificar lagos y pozos de agua, eso impidió un reflejo más amplio y limpio de la imagen, pero al ser algo que se formó naturalmente, creo que le da algo de encanto a la imagen.
Poco tiempo después llegaron los obreros de la universidad y con la ayuda de la alcaldía del municipio lograron dragar la piscina, nuestra mascota se encontraba en la parte más profunda donde había caído la mayor parte del sedimento y lodo, estaba toda llena de barro pero parecía estar feliz, supongo que de alguna manera emulaba su estado en la naturaleza salvaje. En ultima instancia aunque fue un percance que se logro solucionar rápidamente, nos regaló estos maravillosos reflejos que espero les gusten. Nos vemos en el próximo SMARP amigos.
