HUMAN FIGURE

In sculpture class, we once had an experience I will never forget. Our lecturer first instructed us to sketch human figures and then translate those sketches into sculptures. We worked hard on them, thinking we were ready for assessment. But on the first day of assessment, after looking at our efforts, the lecturer didn’t hold back his opinion. He told us that many of our works looked like child’s play. To drive the point home, he even used a huge stick to destroy some of the pieces right in front of us. It was harsh and shocking, but he wanted us to understand that sculpture demands more discipline, precision, and seriousness. He told us to start over and bring back new work the following week. When assessment day came again, there was a clear difference. Some of us had truly improved, showing stronger understanding and effort, while others remained almost exactly where they started. That moment taught me that art isn’t just about creating—it’s about pushing beyond comfort, taking criticism, and proving you can do better when given the chance.
