You won’t forget a long time after watching it. At first, it feels very soft and warm. At a very first glance, it was just some adorable kids living peacefully in an orphanage. But that calmness is a trap I must say. It doesn’t take long before the story turns 180°. There’s a hidden truth behind those smiles, and once it comes in front of us, it becomes something else. The twist was really something different that I had to pause for some moment.
The thing that I was really shocked at how fast the tone changes. One minute it’s all perfect, and suddenly everything changes so fast, just like a blink of an eye. The suspense builds a confusion in you that who to trust. It’s clever, emotional, and honestly, it's kind of scary. I would say it's scary in the best way. The tension was always there and the story keeps attracting you more deeply. Let's know more deeply about its story.
Story Summary and My Review
The Promised Neverland, story starts from an orphanage. The orphanage's name is Grace Field House. In the orphanage, the kids live happily there. "Mama," a kind-hearted woman named Isabella, takes care of them. Among all the children, Emma, Norman, and Ray are the smartest and most curious. At first glance, life seems perfect. It is warm outdoor playtime, and lots of fun. But that illusion breaks in the very first episode.
The twist hits you so hard that it feels like a truck hitting you at full speed. If I tell you more, the orphanage is actually a farm, and the kids are being raised as food for demons. I know after listening to this you are also very shocked like me. When Emma and Norman discover the truth, everything changes at a glance. They matured in a short time and every child’s life's responsibility is on their shoulders.
The thing I loved most about this show is, it plays with your emotions and expectations so well. Every episode increases the tension. You are always curious about what will happen next. You feel the fear in the kids. It becomes an intense psychological game between children and adults, and you’re stuck on it to see who will actually win the game. Children or Adults?
The story is so great, each move the kids make, every strategy, feels dangerous and smart. These aren’t ordinary kids. Emma is stuck in saving everyone. Norman is a calm and strategic kid. He's the kind of kid who thinks and calculates the future and takes a smart move. And Ray is the wildcard. You can never fully trust him, and that’s exactly what makes him interesting. This trio has amazing chemistry, and their different ways of thinking create real tension and drama.
The animation is awesome in its own way. Because the animation is super clean and beautiful. I loved one thing most that the way characters eyes reflect fear or determination. If I talk about the camera angles, it is smart too. Because there were close-ups during tense moments, I mean it was perfect from all aspects. The music is also chilling. Sometimes the music adds anxiety without unnecessary jumpscares.
Honestly speaking, I was scared to keep going after season 1. I heard a lot of complaints about season 2. Because I heard that it skipped some major story arcs from the manga. The fans were understandably upset about the matter. But if we just talk about season 1 alone, it’s almost perfect. It has diverse combinations of tensions, emotions, and full of surprises.
Recommendation?
There are some moments that made my chest really heavy. Again, some moments made me smile, some moments made me feel like a little kid again. The Promised Neverland might be a horror-thriller on the first point but it’s a story about resilience, trust, and refusing to give up. If you like dark psychological thrillers. Not only that but also heart full and brainstorming, then this one's for you.

The Promise Neverland is one of the very few psychological thriller and horror anime that has had the greatest impact on me since the first time I saw it. An incomparable work that is worth seeing.
How regrettable and painful the fiasco of its second season was, truly. One of the worst mistakes CloverWorks has made in its entire career.
