A Map and an Event - March 21, 2026@goldenoakfarm

Yard Plan full size text crop March 2026.jpg

On Saturday morning I didn’t get up until nearly 6:30AM after a late night and poor sleep. I set about checking my e-mail, etc and the Hivegarden QOTW nailed me again.

It wanted a drawing of the “garden”. Now I know @riverflows is in Australia and “garden” tends to mean what “yard” does in the US. Hmmmm…..

Years ago I had attempted to map a plan of the whole yard but never finished. But I had done lots of maps of pieces of it. The last time a yard map was drawn was 2006.

I updated that map to include the New Herb garden in 2018 before we started construction.

September 2018

But a lot had changed in the yard since then. For one thing it had expanded to ¾ of an acre and now included a wildflower area on top of the $30,000 mountain, a mini “English walled garden” for the New Herb garden, 2 sets of fruit trees, and an area for a 3rd large garden and maybe one day, a greenhouse.

To see the full size plan, go here.

So I went down the rabbit hole and found all the maps and information I had collected, and put them all together. I had to do a lot of cleaning up to get a relatively legible copy. And matching up all the various pieces kept me busy for hours.

(When I went to put up the map for this post I decided to fix the mistakes and I realized what I had thought was full sized, really wasn’t. So I spent a couple hours fixing that.)

In the end, after 7 hours, it was finished. I made some lunch and sat down to get my feet up for a while. It had been a beautiful day and I could have gotten another garden done, but I had an event in the evening. It wouldn’t have mattered if I crashed on Sunday from garden work as it’s to rain all day. Sigh….

My #1 intern’s mom work at a local arts center and they were performing The DIY Guide to Life and Death on Saturday night. I knew it would be a late night so hadn’t planned to do anything during the day.

My favorite part (no surprise) was “the DIY Guide to Taking a Damn Rest” where the performers and the audience laid on the floor in silence and rested. In the photo of the rest, Tom, his wife Kelly, and my #1 intern are resting. Someone else took the photos. I found it really restful to sit in silence and lowered lights for 5 minutes. But I heard people starting to get really restless around the 4 min 30 sec mark. My #1 intern said that some people found it made them uneasy to lay or be quiet that long.

I waited while the cast visited afterwards with the audience, many of whom they knew. My #1 intern had found a friend with a 2½ month old little girl and spent most of the evening carrying the baby around.

An interesting tidbit is my #2 intern has christened me “great-aunt” as she has none and it’s an easier way to explain my presence in their lives. My #1 intern has called me her mentor because she started out as an intern 8 years ago. But in these later years, it doesn’t really fit anymore. So maybe I will become a great aunt to all…

So I finally got home, the stoves going, shades pulled and into bed by 10:30PM.

On Sunday I have to finish cleaning up the kitchen, get the laundry folded and put away as I never did it on Friday or Saturday. I need to tend the seedlings then water them. My #1 intern will be washing plant trays and covers as we will need 16 of them. And it’s to rain all day and be in the 50’sF. I’ll be keeping the stove going just a little to take off the chill.

Omg I hope I didn't make too much work for you. I didn't realise that 'yard' was the generic and common name for a garden. We would say BACKyard for suburban blocks, and I guess 'land' for acreages or even 'block' ie what do you have growing on your block?

I hope everyone else interpreted me okay :P

I love that you're a great aunt to many. I think that's such a noble role in the community!

Your YARD definitely needs a map. It's great to have some kind of perspective to it although I think I've absorbed the map over the years reading your posts! And it puts my scrawled map to shame - I whipped one up over coffee this morning on the back of a scrap piece of paper haha!

You don't really need a map for yours! You have a memory! I really didn't mind working on it. it was nice to have a big project to finish that didn't wear me out for the evening. One less thing on the LONG list...

It was something I've wanted to do, but was low on the list. Now it's done!
