Repair to my liking or Buy ready-made? #255

Buying a house is a big decision we make in life. We’ve worked hard and saved lot money just to buy a house, and now we have two options. The first option is a big house that looks beautiful but whose years are behind it. It needs a lot of repairs and remodeling; maybe the roof is even leaking. But the good part is that the price is low. The second option is a small, ready-made house, neat and clean, though not as beautiful as the first one. The house is ready for someone to move in immediately; everything is set. There’s no need to call a carpenter or plumber. But the price is much higher than the first house.

Now the question is: between the two houses, which one will I choose? Will I choose to repair a house to my liking or buy everything ready and fast?

For the repair to my liking

For the old big house, the advantage is space and freedom. We can fix it the way we want. We can choose the design we like, the colors, the type of tiles we want, the kind of kitchen we prefer, etc. After doing everything, it becomes the house that fits us because we have furnished it to our taste and liking. Another benefit of the big house is that it has a big compound, space where we can plant flowers, and space to enjoy fresh air. But the problem is that repairs are not easy. Fixing things can take a lot of time and money. Sometimes when we are repairing one problem, another one shows up. What we thought would cost little may end up costing a lot. And dealing with carpenters and plumbers, who come to fix the house can be very stressful.

Buy everything ready and fast

For the small ready-made house, the advantage is that there’s no stress at all. Because there’s nothing to repair because everything is already in place; all we have to do is move in immediately and start enjoying the house. But the problem is space. There won’t be enough space since the house is small. To make matters worse, if there are, let say five children and the house only has maybe two rooms, one kitchen, and one toilet in each room, it will feel cramped. How will everyone survive living in a small house without space?

So, which one will I choose as a person?

Honestly, it depends on what each of us wants. Some people value their comfort and peace, and hate too much stress. Those people won’t hesitate to choose the small ready-made house. While some people love having space where they can move freely without problems and don’t mind the stress, the big house may be better for them.

If I were to choose, I would go for the bigger old house. My reason is that I don’t plan to change houses all the time. I would rather spend time and effort fixing it now and end up with a bigger, more comfortable space in the future. I’m the type of person who loves space; I hate when everything is jam-packed and there’s no room to move or breathe freely.

Yes, I know repairing a house can be stressful, but at the end of the day, I will have a home that truly feels like mine, shaped to my taste and liking, with enough space to do whatever I want to add later. Another reason I’d choose the bigger house is that I love flowers and rearing chickens, so having the space will be an advantage for me to plant flowers and build a cage for the chickens I want to rear.

In conclusion, both the “repair to my liking” house and the "small ready-made house" have their advantages. Like I said earlier, some people value peace of mind, while others prefer space. As for me, I would rather endure the stress of repairing the bigger house. After all, buying a house is about finding a place that feels like home for us and not about impressing people. What matters most is the comfort, joy, safety, and happiness the house brings to us.
