Hola comunidad @ladiesofhive

Learning, Discovering, and Rediscovering: First Impressions and New Skills

Hello @ladiesofhive community,
This is the first time I am participating in this contest, and I am very excited to share some of my experiences and reflections. As a doctor in Cuba, I have learned that life often puts us in unexpected situations that force us to learn, adapt, and look beyond what seems obvious. Today I want to share a couple of moments that taught me important lessons about learning, perception, and first impressions.
I remember a particularly intense day at the clinic. A patient arrived with symptoms that didn’t fit any pattern I had seen before. It was a moment of absolute pressure: I had to diagnose correctly, apply procedures, and at the same time, remain calm. Within minutes, I had to review recent clinical guidelines, recall protocols I hadn’t used in years, and make quick decisions that would directly affect another person’s life.
That moment taught me that learning under pressure is not just about memorizing information, but about trusting your inner resources, adapting to the situation, and letting your experience guide your hands and intuition. Learning this way, in urgency, is a reminder that our capacity to grow often reveals itself when the pressure is highest.
On the other hand, life has also taught me that first impressions can be deeply misleading. When I started at a new hospital, a young colleague seemed distracted and clumsy to me; I thought he wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure of the service and would be more of an obstacle than a support. However, over time I discovered that his apparent insecurity concealed a meticulous, creative, and highly capable mind. His ideas and solutions made a difference in several critical situations.

I then learned that judging someone based on the first few minutes limits our ability to understand and learn from others. Every person has strengths that only reveal themselves with patience and attention, and many times true talents are hidden behind appearances that can be misleading at first glance.
In these moments, reading and reflection have helped me process the experience and understand that life combines learning, surprise, and humility. The animals that live with me, a cat and a dog, remind me every day that simplicity and presence are also forms of intelligence and care.
At home, among books, small gestures, and silent steps, I have learned that growing as a person and as a professional requires observing, listening, and being open to the unexpected.
I hope these reflections can resonate with others in this community, and I am happy to be participating for the first time in the Ladies of Hive contest.
