My First Experience with Korean Food
Hello everyone,
The first time I ever tried Korean food was something I will never forget I had always heard people talk about how unique Korean dishes were the spices the flavors and the way the meals are served but to be honest I did not really know what to expect I am used to Nigerian food where we like our flavors bold and spicy so I was curious to see if Korean meals would match my taste.
My first dish was bibimbap, it was served in a hot stone bowl and when the waiter placed it in front of me I was honestly surprised at how colorful it was there were so many vegetables carrots, spinach, bean sprouts all neatly arranged with rice at the bottom, a fried egg on top, and a red sauce called gochujang the first thing I thought was how am I supposed to eat this the waiter smiled and explained that I had to mix everything together before eating once I stirred it up the smell hit me a mix of sesame oil, vegetables, and that slightly spicy gochujang sauce the first bite felt strange because it was a completely new combination of flavors for me but after a few spoonfuls I started enjoying it the warm rice balanced the crunch of the vegetables, and the sauce gave it a kick without being too hot.
After that i decided to try kimchi now, this one was different I had heard people say kimchi is an acquired taste and they were right it was sour and spicy, and had a strong smell almost like it had been fermented for a while which I later learned it actually had my first bite was a bit of a shock to my taste buds but the more I tasted it with the rice the more I appreciated the unique flavor finally, I got to try bulgogi. This was my favorite out of all three it is thinly sliced beef marinated in soy sauce, garlic, sugar, and sesame oil, then grilled the meat was so tender, sweet, and savory at the same time It reminded me a little of suya but softer and less peppery I could have eaten a whole plate by myself without even realizing it.
That first experience opened my eyes to how different cultures express themselves through food Korean meals felt lighter compared to what I was used to but they were still very satisfying I also liked how they serve many side dishes, so you get to taste a bit of everything in one sitting looking back i am glad I took the step to try something completely different It taught me that food is more than just eating it is an experience a story and a chance to connect with another culture and now whenever I see a Korean restaurant i am always tempted to go in and try something new, because that first taste of bibimbap, kimchi, and bulgogi left a lasting impression on me.
