Anhinga anhinga: the three moments
Wow, a periscope!
😆

😄 Just with the name of this bird I’m already dying of laughter. In my mind it sounds like a shamanic chant or something of the sort. Go on, try it: Anhinga anhinga - Anhinga anhinga - Anhinga anhinga - Anhinga anhinga - Anhinga anhinga... 😜 Well, be careful, you might wake up the Loch Ness Monster.
And as for the sound it makes… I can’t even tell you, hahaha, it makes me laugh so much as well. You know how much I like birds, they’re so endearing. This sound is like wood cracking.

This was a lifer for me… 😅 But go on, do listen to the sounds it makes here on this site. And if you can, tell me what you associate them with.

And now an Anhinga anhinga hahaha… sorry, also known as Marbella, in flight!
I like this photo even though it isn’t as sharp and well‑defined as I’d wish.
Hello, friends, I’m taking part with this beautiful specimen in Photo Contest Round 254. Did you know this bird?

It is found in swamps surrounded by trees, marshes and artificial ponds. The males are black with white on the wings, while the females are similar but with a brownish neck and head. It dives under the water and spears fish with its dagger‑like bill. It often swims with only the head and neck above the water. Like cormorants, it perches in the open to spread its wings and dry its feathers.

The Marbella was at quite a distance from where I was, but thanks to my zoom lens I managed to photograph it. Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you its origin—this Anhinga, or Marbella, is from Pinar del Río, in the west of the island.
A warm greeting to you all, and see you in the comments section.

Esta es una hermosa imagen, capturado maravillosamente

¡Gracias! 😃 Casi se me escapa pero tuve suerte.
👌
🙌
Beautiful bird! It makes me think of a bird we have here, 'Aalscholver' in my language it's also as deep in the water, kind of a funny thing to see

Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)… I don’t know if this has been sighted here. I would have to ask.
They do look alike, yes! Thanks for sharing this example, that way we all learn. 👌
I've never seen these birds @nanixxx. They are beautiful, as are your photos, but gosh, they do not make a nice sound! I cannot describe that.
😆 A bit strange, that sound… haha… but it’s not terrifying, is it?
Thank you very much @lizelle!
Great photos.
Thank you! 😊
What a beautiful bird that looks like a good underwater fisher. The head reminds me of cormorants with the long neck.
Hello, yes, the description notes their likeness to cormorants, particularly in their fishing ways. 😃 And this drying off in the sun, which I find really cool. I remember some time ago I saw a post here on Hive where there was a cormorant doing this, and I commented on that post. So, I managed to spot one, not up close... but nothing is perfect! Detecting it there in that environment was quite a challenge.
Thank you!
You're right. Cormorants do the same when drying their wings. I had forgotten about that. Interesting!
Good afternoon @nanixxx, beautiful photos. I found the bit about the Loch Ness Monster/Anhinga funny; it was the first thing I thought when I saw the photo.
The photo of the Anhinga flying is gorgeous, with the water acting as a mirror.
Everything seemed perfect to me, I even liked the bird's call... although it doesn't sound like a bird's call.
Thank you so much for sharing these moments.
Big hug.
Hello,
Strange things happen… 😄 And I don’t know why that shamanic rhythm echoes in my head when I read Anhinga anhinga. 🤣
I’m glad you enjoyed this post.

What a beautiful bird! Now I tell you... the lake monster is already loose and I hear rustling in my house although the dream is not wooden and gives terror.... that you have awakened!!!!
Really, beautiful bird, I love it!!!😍
Oh dear, what have I done!… now how will we get the monster back into the lake? 😆 Perhaps there is a counterspell for the Anhinga anhinga.
Busca en tu libro.
Ya mismo me pongo a buscar un hechizo... imagina va a provocarse un caos en el mundo... que has hecho!!🤣
Buenos días!
¡Buenos días! 😀
😁
Thank you! 😊
I had fun imagining the moments to capture these photos... Bravo!
I’m not sure if it’s the same Anhinga, but I took these photos at two different moments.
Thank you!
The sound this bird makes is very similar to that of the Carancho (or Cara Cara) hoarse, like an engine trying to start haha 😂
How beautiful! I love the wide variety of sounds birds can make. It shows that not all of them were born to be sopranos haha Some, like the Anhinga and the Cara Cara, could be trap singers or something like that 😂
Imagina una banda urbana con estas dos aves jajajaja
Jajaja, sí, como un tractorcito. No... esa soy yo roncando. 😂
Buenos días @elbuhito y Yami.
What beautiful photographs you took in that natural setting.
How funny about the shamanic chant, ha ha ha, if you repeat it several times, it does sound like that.
The sound is very hoarse, but you can also hear a much softer one responding to it 🤔
Thank you @nanixxx, for everything you shared with us.
Greetings and blessings.
Thank you, @popurri. Perhaps the bird that answered so softly was just a bit tired… haha, only joking. I’m really glad you stopped by and that you enjoyed this post. Surely you’ll remember this bird for its link with shamanism… 🤣
A hug!
Amazing bird and the sound is so different than anything I have heard. It is like wood cracking. 😀

Thank you! 😇 Whenever I spot a bird for the first time, it thrills me.
