Last week's trip had me away from #beersaturday but I am back safe and sound for week 441! ! You are invited to leave a huge upvote and join our friend @detlev to create your own #beersaturday post with the gang at https://hive.blog/hive-187719/@detlev/beersaturday-441 !

In this edition, I crack into my Beer Advent Calendar scored at this year's beer exchange!

The Beer Exchange

You can read about our tour here but here is the prize at the end of that long drunkfest. 24 individually wrapped and numbered craft beers from across the country.

Beer #1 - Charlie's Pub Ale

IMG_7399.JPG

24 beer drinkers were welcomes to December with a wonderfully wrapped beer number 1. Every night a new mystery to unwrap and taste!

IMG_7400.JPG

I have had Trestle Brewing Company before and recall no particularly enjoying it. Opening this beauty and finding a simple pub ale with some old dood on it, I figured we were off to a slow start when it comes to unique, craft beers.

IMG_7401.JPG

The meandering diatribe on the side of the can didn't do anything to improve my outlook on this beer but at least it wasn't a pissy yellow. Turns out this was a delicious and enjoyable beer even for an IPA addict. A reasonable malt, nice balance between sweet and dry, crisp and delicious! Uncle Charlie may have been barely literate with his objections but this is a nice beer!

Beer #2 - Chockie Wockie

IMG_7403.JPG

At number 2, we had a nice soock wrapping with a twine bow and a little wooden cut out with the number. Will it be an IPA finally? A boring lager? Strange sour?

IMG_7404.JPG

Turns out it is a nice dark one from solid brewery Cameron's Brewing A nice change from the first pub ale and something a little dark for the holiday season.

IMG_7405.JPG

Chockie Wockie is obviously a chocolate milkshake stout and I expected to see some additives like chocolate or lactose sugar. Turns out they for chocolate and creamy the proper way with only hops, malt, yeast and a little wheat for the smoother feel. A damn good beer with decent IBU and high abv for your typical stout. Just a treat almost like dessert!

Beer #3 - Diving Horse

IMG_7406.JPG

Another festive sock with a ginger bread man for the wrapper on beer # 3. Maybe something spicy or sweet?
IMG_7407.JPG

This is my first introduction to Muddy York Brewing Company out of Stouffville Ontario. A pale ale huh? That can mean plenty of things and I am hoping it is hoppier than some of the simple pale ales you can find.

IMG_7408.JPG

Diving Horsehas a neat historic story on the label that ends with a welcome punchline including a few IPA hops to suggest it may be a nice one! Not as edgy as a session IPA and not as plain as some pale ales, this is a damn good beer for only 5.6% abv and nice balance of subtly sweet and slightly fruity with an understated dry edge.

3 good beers to start out the advent calendar!

Thanks my man! Cheers!

Reminds me, did you confirm you won that pumpkin contest? I am just gonna delegate the prize and we can work it out later. 2 months instead of 1 for the confusion.

Haha ya he sounds like a funny old guy. It was actually an English special bitter and delicious despite my need for hops.

You know, when I head to the fridge, my first choice is a pint of the draft that we brew....most likely an IPA. When it is can time, I must admit most times I will reach past the other beers to get an IPA as well.

This year, with the advent calendar filled with personal picks from craft beer lovers, I am enjoying the surprise and discovering some non IPAs I love! Hopefully I will have a few I hate so I can get some insulting on ;)
