The Shadow of the Essential Bag. [EN/ES] Entry for the Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest-Round 414.

Hello, friends of the #ShadowHunters community, thanks to our friend @melinda010100 for inviting us to this initiative in her Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest – Round 414.

There is a popular saying that a man’s best friend is a sack. I have always found it a bit grotesque, but quite graphic. In Cuba, as with almost everything, the saying evolved: now some people say that a bag is your best friend. And not just any bag, but that inseparable companion for outings, unexpected shopping trips, and sudden opportunities.

In today’s Cuba, going out into the street is rarely just going out. It means going out to look for something. Something to bring home. Mainly food, but also toiletries or whatever happens to “show up.” That day I was carrying a bag in my hand — I remember it was made of cloth, sturdy, one of those you keep for important occasions — although in the shadow you cannot see the material. In the photograph you only see its silhouette, hanging from my hand like a natural extension of my arm.

Interestingly, the shadow does not reveal details, but it does reveal intention. It does not show whether it is nylon or cloth, whether it is empty or full. It only draws the shape of someone walking prepared. And perhaps that is the true shadow of these times: the figure of a person who does not go out for a stroll, but out of necessity. Because here, more than an accessory, the bag has become a symbol.

The photos were taken with a mobile phone, and for the English version I used Google Translator.

Thank you! In Cuba, if the bag comes back with something inside, it’s always a good day. Luckily, this time it wasn’t empty!
