Esta semana una de las preguntas me hizo detenerme más de lo que esperaba. No porque la respuesta sea complicada, sino porque muchas veces es incómoda.

La pregunta es si alguna vez he tolerado un comportamiento abusivo por presión social.
La respuesta corta sería sí. Y creo que muchas mujeres podrían decir lo mismo.

No hablo necesariamente de grandes escenas o situaciones dramáticas. A veces el abuso aparece de formas más silenciosas: comentarios que minimizan, bromas que incomodan, críticas constantes disfrazadas de preocupación.

Durante mucho tiempo pensé que lo mejor era no reaccionar. Que responder haría las cosas más difíciles. Que quizás estaba exagerando o interpretando mal las cosas.

También existe esa presión invisible de “no crear problemas”. De mantener la paz, incluso cuando algo dentro de ti se siente incómodo.
Y así, poco a poco, uno aprende a callar ciertas cosas.

Con el tiempo entendí algo importante: tolerar ese tipo de comportamiento no lo hace desaparecer. Solo lo vuelve más fácil para quien lo hace.

No siempre es sencillo marcar límites, sobre todo cuando la persona está cerca de nosotros: un amigo, un familiar, alguien del trabajo. Pero aprender a hacerlo cambia mucho la forma en que uno se relaciona con el mundo.

Hoy trato de escuchar más esa pequeña incomodidad interna. Esa voz que dice “esto no se siente bien”.

No siempre reacciono perfecto, ni siempre encuentro las palabras correctas. Pero al menos ya no me obligo a aceptar lo que antes toleraba solo para evitar conflictos.

Aprender a poner límites también es una forma de respeto hacia uno mismo.

Y a veces, ese pequeño acto de honestidad personal puede cambiar más de lo que imaginamos.

When Silence Weighs More Than the Truth

This week one of the questions made me pause longer than I expected. Not because the answer is complicated, but because many times it is uncomfortable.

The question is whether I have ever tolerated abusive behavior because of social pressure.

The short answer would be yes. And I think many women could say the same.

I’m not necessarily talking about big scenes or dramatic situations. Sometimes abuse appears in quieter ways: comments that minimize you, jokes that make you uncomfortable, constant criticism disguised as concern.

For a long time I thought the best thing was not to react. That responding would make things more difficult. That maybe I was exaggerating or misinterpreting things.

There is also that invisible pressure of “not creating problems.” Of keeping the peace, even when something inside you feels uncomfortable.

And little by little, you learn to stay silent about certain things.

With time I understood something important: tolerating that kind of behavior does not make it disappear. It only makes it easier for the person who does it.

It is not always easy to set boundaries, especially when the person is close to us: a friend, a family member, someone from work. But learning to do it changes a lot about the way you relate to the world.

Today I try to listen more to that small inner discomfort. That voice that says, “this doesn’t feel right.”

I don’t always react perfectly, and I don’t always find the right words. But at least I no longer force myself to accept what I once tolerated just to avoid conflict.

Learning to set boundaries is also a form of respect toward yourself.

And sometimes, that small act of personal honesty can change more than we imagine.
