Beautiful eggs without chicks

Femi, a final year postgraduate student, was assigned the project of carrying out a type of crossbreeding known as inbreeding, using birds, by his supervisor, Professor Mezie. This involves crossbreeding closely related individuals of a species to produce a particular desired quality. He was to select, and crossbreed only birds that laid large eggs.

As Femi continued in the project, he succeeded in producing a pure stock that was laying very large eggs. To his surprise, at a stage, the eggs began to change colour, to blue. The greatest surprise of all was the production of an extraordinary large egg with a brown colour.

In shock, Femi carried a sample of the eggs in a basket to his supervisor's house. He was expecting the professor to express surprise at the appearance of the strange eggs but, the professor only smiled and shook his head in admiration.

Meanwhile, the two kids of the professor came out to take a look at the strange eggs. They had not seen any egg that looked like those ones. The kids were not just speechless but, appeared at a loss as they looked at them.

"Well, before we conclude, go and put the eggs in the incubator for two days", the professor instructed.

Femi came back after two days to report that all the eggs had hatched but, none of them had any chick.

"You've proved it, my boy", Professor Mezie congratulated Femi, smiling and, extending his hand for a handshake.

Femi looked at his supervisor with curiosity written over his face as he stretched his own hand fearfully for the handshake. He was not yet sure what his supervisor was driving at. "Have I committed a blunder?" He thought.

The professor continued, "You're experiment has lent credence to the point that inbreeding is disadvantageous".

"Inbreeding?" Asked Femi.

"Yes. Inbreeding will end up producing organisms that have little or no capacity to survive in their environment. It may lead to organisms that are not viable, just like these eggs, notwithstanding their good looks".

"This means that outbreeding is the real thing", Femi responded.

"Of course. Outbreeding involves crossing individuals of genetically distinct populations, such that more varieties of genes are combined to produce offsprings that are not just viable but, more disease resistant".

It only works to a certain level. It can also bring diseases to species who never suffered from it before. Inbreeding is done by animals with a pedigree. Pigeons are a good example. The strongest, best are kept the rest are killed. This way you have the top of the top.

A good topic!

Thanks for putting more light on the issue of inbreeding. That's good.
