LOH #285: 'YES MAN' Helped Me Be Brave

Hello, ladies… I hope you’re all keeping well.

Seeing this week’s contest prompt took me back to my situation in 2012. That was the year I started applying for a contract role at one of Indonesia’s largest franchise companies. The requirement after passing the first stage was to attend a two-week training course to prepare me for the job and the profession.

During the training period, everything went smoothly. I didn’t miss a single day and I was really keen to pass. After all, I needed this job. If I didn’t get through, I’d be a pitiful unemployed person because I didn’t have many connections or work experience.

And on the final day before saying goodbye to the trainers, they turned off the lights in the room and played a trailer for the 2008 film Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey. A comedy, romance, and self-development film.

It’s about a man named Carl Allen, who was initially someone who always turned things down in his life. He refused to hang out with friends, refused to try new things, and even turned down every opportunity that came his way. Eventually, he felt that his life was very stagnant and boring. Until one day he attended a ‘YES’ seminar, where he was advised to say ‘YES’ to whatever came his way. Eventually, his life became vibrant again. He tried new things, learnt a new language, embraced new opportunities, and even found new love. Although the film also shows that not everything needs to be accepted, there’s no harm in opening oneself up and not being closed off.

To this day, this film remains the reason I don’t rule out even the most challenging opportunities. Although I’m not quite that reckless, since watching the film, I’ve become able to embrace many opportunities: friends, social life, and even new opportunities and knowledge. I absolutely love the message in this film, Yes Man.

I used to be in a very closed-off phase and even tended to be apathetic towards people or social life, until I met Carl Allen in Yes Man.

Thank you for this funny, light-hearted, and meaningful self-growth film that changed my perspective on life. I’m grateful to have discovered it. That’s the story I can share for this week’s contest. See you next week, ladies.
