My Sketchquest Entry: Hidden Sanctuary in the Pines

Hey Hive and everyone following the Sketchquest contest

For this week I decided to do something a little different and let my own recent art inspire me. This drawing is a recreation of my previous "Luminary Sanctuary" piece, but I covered it up with dense, dark pine trees. I really enjoyed the idea of taking something bright and cozy and making it look hidden and kind of mysterious.

It was interesting to work with the contrast. Before, the building was all about that warm glow and the festive red bow, but now, it’s about the quiet solitude of the forest. The tower is peeking out from behind all those trees, almost like it’s a secret spot you would stumble upon on a late walk. I liked how the dark, misty colors of the trees really make the top of the tower look isolated against the night sky.

Drawing quiet, reserved scenes like this is definitely my comfort zone, even though I spend a lot of time with the loud energy of marching band practice in school. It feels good to switch gears and focus on the small lines of the pine needles and the structure. It’s a good way to relax and reflect.

What do you think of this sketch I'd love to hear your thoughts on the atmosphere. Good luck to everyone else participating in the contest

Here I show you some snapshots while I was making this drawing:
