📰 Report: The Greens’ Participation in World Environment Day 2025
🌍 Theme: End Plastic Pollution – Community-Led Actions to Tackle Plastic Pollution in Bamenda
📅 Date: June 4, 2025
📍 Venue: Alliance Française, Bamenda
In celebration of the 52nd edition of 🌍 World Environment Day (WED), The Greens 🌱 joined forces with several local organizations including, Reconciliation and Development Association (RADA), Bright Light Projects (BLP), Youth Association for Climate Action (YACA), Better Breed Cameroon, ASDEPCO, HEED Cameroon, and key partners such as Alliance Française Bamenda and the Regional Delegation of Environment (RD-MINEPDED) to organize a community workshop aimed at combating plastic pollution through local, practical solutions.
This year, we shifted the focus from awareness to action. Under the theme "End Plastic Pollution: Community-Led Actions to Tackle Plastic Pollution," the workshop empowered over 80 youth participants and engaged more than 20 stakeholders and media personnel, including representatives from CRTV and The Voice Newspaper.
The event began with welcoming remarks from the North West Regional Delegate of MINEPDED, Mr. Mue Denis Kpue, who emphasized the potential for plastic recycling and upcycling to create green jobs. Echoing this, the President of the Network of Environmental Stakeholders Cameroon (NES-Cam) encouraged participants to view plastic not just as waste, but as a resource for entrepreneurship, citing the exemplary work of The Greens and other stakeholders.
Nsangou Rudolf, the Director of Projects and Programs of The Greens, gave a presentation on the theme of the day, which was followed by a series of trainings that included;
♻ Creating nursery planters from plastic bottles presented Caroline Emma and Bunila Berinyuy Shalin from The Greens
✅ Making drying lines and toothbrush holders from plastic bottles by Dzelamunyuy Ghislain Simuben of Eco Fridge
📿 Crafting traditional beads from old calendars
🛞 Creating chairs from discarded tires by Munyuy Mercy Vernyuy of Heed Cameroon
🧱 Producing pavement bricks from shredded plastic
🌱 And tree planting around the venue to promote ecosystem balance
Smiles, energy, and enthusiasm filled the air as youth discovered how waste could become opportunity. Through these workshops, young people gained valuable skills in recycling and upcycling that could lead to income-generating activities and contribute to the growing green job sector projected to reach over 700,000 by 2040.
The Greens reaffirm our belief that real environmental change is driven by empowered communities, hence the need for our framework (Decentralized Plastic Waste Management Systems (DPWMS) and the PEAR Project: https://www.gofundme.com/f/empower-youth-fight-plastic-pollution-with-the-pear-project
