✦ If you think about it, this is really funny because I've never smoked, I don't like alcohol, and I've never tried drugs—nor do I want to. I'm a healthy carrot who sometimes likes to dress up as men from dubious stories that don't exist XD - Collage & Edition in FotoJet, photos by @Tesmoforia

Twenty years ago today, “crossplay” was a novelty within the cosplay community, no matter which country you were from; it wasn't as popular a form of cosplay as the canonical versions, and terms or variations like ‘genderbend’ were more common, so it was rare to come across a “crossplayer” at conventions.

Today, that has changed; “crossplayers” are extremely popular and highly regarded both by regulars in their respective fandoms and within the various artistic communities that exist online.

✦ In my opinion, crossplay standards are sky-high these days. I mean, just achieving an androgynous look isn't enough anymore, especially with the growing popularity of Korean and Chinese comics ✦

Something I’ve been thinking about for a while now is that there are so many tools and resources available today to achieve a more realistic look—or one that’s closer to the opposite gender—like guides for better facial contouring, makeup effects and illusions, foam or silicone accessories to make your shoulders look broader or your waist smaller, or even full, highly realistic silicone torsos, and in different sizes, body types, and colors!

I’m sure that if you use TikTok, for example, you’ve seen a guy or girl transform into a character of the opposite gender with an impressive look, and basically that’s “crossplay” or being a “crossplayer”—cosplaying a character of the opposite gender.

✦ And of course I'd do it again just for fun—I don't know about Sebastian, but I'd definitely do it with other characters from the story ✦

Many years ago, when Kuroshitsuji was one of the most popular anime series, it was quite common to see groups of cosplayers dressed as characters from the show. Out of the entire manga, my favorite characters were Grell and Sebastian, and I think my cosplays back then were pretty basic.

I just used a simple binder to conceal my bust and a girdle to slightly reduce the size of my hips and legs; even so, I think it was pretty obvious that I was a woman, but it wasn’t something I was obsessed with or worried about too much because I’ve never acted like a man or wanted to be perceived as one, but speaking from an artistic perspective, today I look with great admiration at the work of some of my crossplayer friends who pay attention to and study even the smallest details (in everyday life they’re very beautiful and feminine, but when they do their crossplay, even the way they walk and look changes—I think they’re admirable).

Well, just like every week, I’m gradually digging up photos from trips and manga/anime conventions I’ve attended. I especially like these ones because they’re unedited. The first one is a photo someone asked me to take while I was sitting on a staircase, and the second one, I think, was taken as we were leaving the convention—a candid shot snapped by a friend.

I remember it was really hot and my makeup would melt away in just a few minutes—that’s just part of living in a tropical country. But no matter the challenges, those were always happy times when we had wholesome fun. I really cherish these photos because they remind me fondly of how time has passed, and it’s truly interesting to make comparisons—from the general to the most personal—even within such a specific niche.
