Higher or Lower Contest - Round 6

13 goals were scored in round 5 yesterday. Unlucky for some, as 4 players incorrectly went with higher than round 4ʼs 16 goals.

Early on, that was looking like the correct call. The matches in the Netherlands and France which kicked off early produced 8 goals. We then then had 4 goals in the first halves of the late evening matches but the flood gates did not open with only a solitary goal in the 2nd half of those games as Ipswich celebrated a winner to take them into the promotion spots.

It wasnʼt for lacking of trying. Man City had 28 shots and generated an xG of 3.54 against Burnley but couldnʼt add to Haalandʼs 5th minute strike.

Barcelona, however, where fairly lackluster against Celta Vigo with just a Lamine Yamal penalty to show for their efforts. Barca and Spainʼs footballing prodigy them limped off at half-time to raise concerns about his participation in the upcoming World Cup.

13 then is very ʼmiddle groundʼ and we have an eclectic array of fixtures for players to decide upon this evening.

Salford v Bromley

Dipping down into the 4th tier of English football. The reason you might have heard of the home team is that Salford City are the club that the United ʼClass of 92ʼ have invested in. That includes the likes of Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.

They helped turn the club professional and get them into the football league proper (Division 2 is the lowest tier of the football league in England) and the club now sits 4th in the table, a point off 3rd which would be enough for automatic promotion to Division 1.

However, they find themselves up against another side who are looking to rise quickly through the ranks in Bromley. Bromley were playing in the 6th Tier of English football as recently as 2015 and now sit top of Division 2.

Promotion (their 3rd in the last decade) is already guaranteed for them. The real question is whether they can seal the title! They are currently 2 points clear of MK Dons with 2 to play but have taken just a point from their last 2 games.

Clearly there is plenty riding on this match for both these evenly matched teams and as such youʼd be surprised if it turned into a goal fest.

Salford are also strong at home having won 5 of their last 6 games here, conceding just twice in the process.

Real Oviedo v Villarreal

With Atheltico Madridʼs La Liga form disintegrating, Villarreal are chasing the title of ʼbest of the restʼ in Spain behind the big 2.

Perhaps more importantly, a win in this game against bottom club Real Oviedo, would all but guarantee them Champions League football next season.

As for Ovideo, they are attempting to engineer the great escape. Theyʼve won just 6 league matches all season but 3 of those have come in their last 4 outings. Only top placed Barca have won more La Liga points than Oviedo across the last 5 rounds!

Their chances of survival (they are still 7 points off safety) look to rest with their home form where, to be honest, they tend to grind out fairly unspectacular results!

3 of their last 5 games here have finished as 1-0 wins to them and they have accumulated 6 clean sheets in their last 9 home matches with only 1 game in that sequence going beyond the 2.5 goal mark.

It suggests then that the bookies odds of 1.85 for under 2.5 goals might be a little generous despite the gap in the league table between these 2 sides.

PSV v Zwolle

Itʼs party time in Eindhoven!

PSV have walked the Eredivisie this season with 24 wins from 30 matches, scoring 84 goals in the process. Their nearest rivals, Feyenoord, are but a speck in the distance, some 19 points off the pace.

Zwolle are floating round in bottom half of the table with seemingly very little to play for. They should be safe but it seems unlikely that they are about to make a run for a Conference league play-off spot. In fact, Zwolle have become masters of the draw in recent weeks, recording 5 stalemates in their last 7 games.

In previous rounds, Iʼve generally tried to pick matches which have something riding on them. This one doesnʼt.

How might that impact the outcome? I guess weʼll find out.

Zwolle have the 2nd worst defensive record in the league this season. They lost the reverse fixture 4-0 and got hammered 6-0 on their last visit to the Philips Stadion.

If PSV turn-up to play, then this has the makings of a high-scoring game which could be the basis on which we go higher than 13 goals.

Malmo v Sirius

Yes, weʼre throwing some curve balls in there now.

Welcome to the Swedish League where footballers come flatpacked and ready to build with just the aid of allen key.

The difficulty in predicting this outcome is not just that you and I probably donʼt know a whole heap about Swedish domestic football, itʼs because unlike most European leagues, the Allsvenskan isnʼt just about to finish (no pun intended), itʼs just getting going!

This is the 4th round of the 2026 season between 2 sides with unbeaten records to date. Sirius in fact have played 3 won 3.

Youʼve probably heard of Malmo on the basis that they are one of the biggest clubs in the Division and regular contenders in European competitions - they exited the league stage of the Europa League this season with just a single point.

Sirius meanwhile have never finished higher than 7th in the Swedish top flight and in fact, found themselves playing semi-professional football in Swedenʼs 3rd tier as recently 2013.

9 goals and 9 points in their opening 3 games means that Malmo canʼt take them lightly despite being the favourites.

Stuttgart v Freiburg

Finally weʼre heading back to one of our more regular haunts in Germany but this time not for a Bundesliga tie, instead for a DFB Cup semi-final.

These 2 are playing for the opportunity to get thrashed by Bayern in the final. In fact, you might remember thatʼs exactly what happened to Stuttgart in Round 2 of this contest when they were also present for the Munich giants lifting of the league trophy after losing 4-2.

This game is likely to be much closer. In league terms itʼs 4th vs 7th with Stuttgart still in the hunt for a CL spot. I guess itʼs whether Stuttgartʼs focus is more on that outcome rather than the Cup?

Both these teams competed in the Europa League this season with Freiburg having made it through to the semis of that tournament too! Again, the potential for split priorities as winning that one is their only hope of CL football next year.

At least in England, we tend to think of ʼCup Teamsʼ as being the more entertaining side that can pull a result out of the hat. Stuttgart fit that bill with 104 goals in their 30 Bundesliga matches including 19 in their last 4.

Freiburg tend to be more measured in the league but have been very effective in their cup games both domestically and abroad. Theyʼve scored 11 goals in their last 3 Europa League ties and 8 goals in 4 the 4 DFB Cup rounds prior to this.
