LA zoo was really cool early in the morning also. Griffith Park and the Observatory are also cool little detours. Take a hillside hike up to the observatory. Years ago that was lots of fun. I don’t know about now.
Sidenote, I had a lot of fun doing donuts in the parking-lot before they close it all off about 18 years ago. I actually thought the space/area was a public service.
If you’re in that area again, check out a place called “corner cottage” on the weekdays. It’s a few blocks north of there, but, really good chicken tacos.
