Flora: Árbol Mijao

Hay árboles que nos quitan el aliento tan solo con verlos, su majestuosidad asombra hasta el más insensible de los mortales y nadie puede negar que esos momentos son tan especiales como el mismo árbol. En un paseo de trekking que realicé hace unas semanas viví esa experiencia mágica sola y en colectivo porque absolutamente todos los que estuvimos en sus raíces gigantes quedamos igual de asombrados con este árbol, sentirse diminuto en sus raíces es algo que no te hace sentir pequeño sino humilde y a la vez bendecido.

El miajo es un árbol que se conoce con varios nombres en Latinoamérica como el espavé, caracolí o mijao, pero su nombre científico es el Anacardium excelsum.

Características:

Tronco

Se caracteriza por tener un tronco cilíndrico muy grueso, raíces extremadamente fuertes que sobresalen de la superficie haciendo que cualquier mortal de un metro y medio como yo se vea aún más diminuto.

Hojas

Sus hojas son grandes como todo en él, son ovaladas y a lo lejos se ven brillantes teniendo una textura como el caucho o el cuero, los propietarios del lugar donde se encuentra el árbol de la foto me dieron estos detalles y desconocen los años que tiene, pero deben ser muchos. Mientras conversaba sobre el árbol varias veces le pregunté el nombre porque se me olvidaba.

Fruto

El Anacardium excelsum o mijao no solo impresiona por su tamaño y raíces, también tiene una historia fascinante en cuanto a sus usos y su fruto. De los árboles gigantes nunca espero que den fruto, considero que con la sombra que dan es suficiente propósito para ellos pero este si tiene fruto y es pequeño y jugoso además de dulce, aunque tiene un toque un poco áspero y astringente, se come tostado. Personalmente, no lo he probado, pero debe ser parecido en cuanto a sabor al fruto del merey.

Usos del Mijao

Madera:

Con un solo tronco del mijao si lo dejan crecer y madurar se puede construir piezas grandes de embarcación como canoas y botes.

Medicina Popular:

Se usan sus hojas y la corteza de su tronco para infusiones que tratan la diarrea, el dolor de muela, es un antiinflamatorio tópico.

Ecosistema

Es un árbol vital para la fauna; sus frutos sirven de alimento para murciélagos, monos y diversas aves.

No se puede mirar y estar cerca de un Mijao sin abrazarlo, es irresistible. Con este ejemplar es imposible sacarse una foto y que salga completo igual hice el intento. Lo abracé y conversamos un momento, le pedí algunas cosas y le dejé otras para qué las entregará a la madre tierra.

Fauna: Oruga

Para ser sincera dudé en participar este mes en el concurso porque no creí encontrar un animal fuera de lo común en las calles, ya que una de las reglas principales es que no debía ser doméstico; sin embargo, todo cambió cuando en el marco de la puerta principal mi hermano se encontró algo espeluznante y me llamó con urgencia, cuando lo vi todo se me arrugó y expresé un “uhí bicho tan grande y feo es este”, obviamente no es una mascota que tenga domesticada ellos no son mis animales favoritos.

Después de verlo un rato recordé el concurso y corrí por mi celular, lo observé bien y comencé a sentir cosas por este animal, paso de ser un bicho un gusanito 😂, mientras lo veía me parecía cada vez más bonito y dejó de ser espelúznate y desagradable a un lindo gusanito con destellos de luz y colores, si observas bien las fotos podrás ver estos detalles.

Además, en sus extremos parecen tener dos cabezas, me divertí un rato tratando de adivinar cuál era y lo tocaba un poco para ver si se movía, pero nada, no quiso complacerme, lo más extraño es que estaba luchando contra la gravedad, aferrado en la parte superior del marco de madera. Pude identificar su cabeza por los cachitos 🤣 dónde más pueden salir los cachos, ya que la cola tiene una pullitas más larga.

Una vez que la fotografié le dije a mi hermano que la agarrara con una pala y la colocara en alguna planta, (aunque el tenia ganas de hacer otra cosa fatal con ella) espero que cumpliera mis indicaciones y me fui a preguntarle a mi amigo Google que todo lo sabe, qué tipo de gusano es, para mi sorpresa no era un gusano 😲😱🤭. Es una oruga que es diferente, muy probablemente del género Opsiphanes (conocidas como mariposas búho).

Por eso tenía esos lindos destellos de colores y luz. Detrás o en el interior de un bicho baboso y feo puede encontrarse un hermoso ser llenó de encanto 😅 aplica para todo ser vivo.

Características:

Su cuerpo segmentado en coloración rojiza o rosada.

Tiene apéndices en forma de "V" en su extremo posterior son características distintivas de estas orugas.

Su apariencia gorda y coloración intensa a menudo indican que la oruga está en una fase prepupal, es decir, se está preparando para formar una crisálida y realizar su metamorfosis. Se estaba transformando.

Es común verlas inmóviles en paredes o troncos durante varios días mientras inician su transformación. No sé como llegó a la puerta, pero debía quitarla de ese lugar, de ahora en adelante veré las orugas con otros ojos 🤣, porque no toda oruga es gusano ni todo gusano es oruga.

Welcome to my post on the wonders of nature, marking my second entry in the wild flora and fauna competition.

Flora: The Mijao Tree

There are trees that take our breath away just by looking at them; their majesty amazes even the most unfeeling of mortals, and no one can deny that those moments are as special as the tree itself. On a trekking trip I went on a few weeks ago, I experienced that magic both alone and as part of a group, because absolutely everyone who stood amongst its giant roots was equally awestruck by this tree; feeling tiny amongst its roots is something that doesn’t make you feel small, but rather humble and, at the same time, blessed.

The miajo is a tree known by various names in Latin America, such as espavé, caracolí or mijao, but its scientific name is Anacardium excelsum.

Characteristics:

Trunk

It is characterised by a very thick cylindrical trunk and extremely strong roots that protrude from the surface, making any five-foot-tall mortal like me look even smaller.

Leaves

Its leaves are large, like everything else about it; they are oval-shaped and appear glossy from a distance, with a texture like rubber or leather. The owners of the property where the tree in the photo stands gave me these details; they do not know how old it is, but it must be many years old. Whilst chatting about the tree, I asked them its name several times because I kept forgetting it.

Fruit

The Anacardium excelsum, or mijao, is not only impressive for its size and roots; it also has a fascinating history regarding its uses and its fruit. I never expect giant trees to bear fruit; I consider the shade they provide to be purpose enough for them. However, this one does bear fruit, which is small, juicy and sweet, though it has a slightly rough and astringent touch; it is eaten roasted. Personally, I haven’t tried it, but it must be similar in flavour to the cashew fruit.

Uses of the Mijao

Wood:

With a single trunk of the mijao, if left to grow and mature, large boat parts such as canoes and dinghies can be built.

Folk Medicine:

Its leaves and the bark of its trunk are used in infusions to treat diarrhoea and toothache; it is a topical anti-inflammatory.

Ecosystem

It is a vital tree for wildlife; its fruits serve as food for bats, monkeys and various birds.

You cannot look at or stand near a Mijao without hugging it; it is irresistible. With this specimen, it is impossible to take a photo that captures the whole tree, though I did give it a go. I hugged it and we chatted for a moment; I asked it for a few things and left others for it to pass on to Mother Earth.

Fauna: Caterpillar

To be honest, I hesitated to enter this month’s competition because I didn’t think I’d find anything out of the ordinary on the streets, given that one of the main rules is that it mustn’t be a domestic animal; however, everything changed when my brother found something creepy in the frame of the front door and called me urgently; when I saw it, I cringed and exclaimed, “Ugh, what a big, ugly bug this is!” Obviously, it’s not a pet I’d keep—they’re not my favourite animals.

After looking at it for a while, I remembered the competition and rushed for my mobile. I took a good look at it and started to feel something for this creature; it went from being a creature to a little worm 😂. As I watched it, it seemed more and more beautiful to me and stopped being creepy and unpleasant, becoming a cute little worm with flashes of light and colour. If you look closely at the photos, you’ll be able to see these details.

What’s more, at its ends it looks as though it has two heads. I had a bit of fun trying to guess which one it was and touched it a little to see if it moved, but nothing—it didn’t want to oblige me. The strangest thing is that it was fighting against gravity, clinging to the top of the wooden frame. I could identify its head by the little horns 🤣 – where else would the horns come out, since the tail has a slightly longer bit.

Once I’d photographed it, I told my brother to scoop it up with a dustpan and put it on a plant (though he was itching to do something else rather nasty with it). I hoped he’d follow my instructions, and I went to ask my friend Google, who knows everything, what sort of worm it was. To my surprise, it wasn’t a worm 😲😱🤭. It’s a caterpillar that’s different, most likely of the genus Opsiphanes (known as owl moths).

That’s why it had those lovely flashes of colour and light. Behind or inside a slimy, ugly creature, you might find a beautiful being full of charm 😅 – this applies to every living thing.

Characteristics:

Its segmented body is reddish or pink in colour.

It has ‘V’-shaped appendages at its rear end, which are distinctive features of these caterpillars.

Its plump appearance and intense colouring often indicate that the caterpillar is in a pre-pupal stage, meaning it is preparing to form a chrysalis and undergo its metamorphosis. It was transforming.

It is common to see them motionless on walls or tree trunks for several days as they begin their transformation. I don’t know how it got to the door, but I had to remove it from there; from now on I’ll see caterpillars in a different light 🤣, because not every caterpillar is a worm, nor is every worm a caterpillar.
