First you think he is some type of contrived edgy dude for the drama, the next for the script, ad infinitum. But over time, we understand what is motivating him. Kyotaro is not much of a bad person, or a monster, or a harsh person, he's just someone who has to deal with loneliness and insecurity, and self-respect, he want to be visible, he didn't want to restarted the world without someone listening to him.

Anna Yamada, meanwhile, beams like a sun throughout any scene that allows herself into the frame. She is tall, pretty and near everybody in school likes her. But behind that sunny exterior Anna has her own securities. “Because she’s awkward, a little clumsy, even, and way more grounded than you’d expect if you met her and saw how popular she is.” Where this anime shines is the unlikely pair of personalities and how they eventually learn to find peace in each other’s presence. So it’s like their relationship’s not all absorbed or contrived. This is a story that unfurls gradually — one that is heavy with small, but significant, moments that sound exactly right.

It’s a very funny anime; one great thing about the anime is that it has just the right mixture of humor and really heartfelt emotion. There are a fair amount of funny scenes, such as those involving Anna’s clumsiness or if Kyotaro freaks out when she is near him. But among those laughs, a sweetness always simmers. For instance, Kyotaro does little things to support Anna that are unobserved by everyone else, and that’s his way of demonstrating he cares in big ways, though those things are not always vocalised; it’s never specifically spoken of that Kyotaro takes care of Anna as she does for him. There’s that quiet backing underpinning why their relationship is so special.

Story: Growth is a positive, too. Kyotaro, who thought he was useless and inferior, grows confident through his time with Anna. From that point onward, Ethan begins to realize he is more than just a background character in life, a human being capable of loving and being loved. It’s a pleasure to see him go from a melancholic boy with naughty thoughts to a man who really does love Anna and the type of man who wants to care for her.

It was no doubt really admirable also that the anime did not one-dimensional-ly “popular girl” her, it gave her space to be an actual person, flawed and relatable.
