Anime that combines chaos, comedy, with heart as Mob Psycho 100 does is rare. When I originally watched it, I anticipated another shonen with flashiness and wild battles and super-powered heroes. But something more that I discovered was a story of a quiet boy who is attempting to figure himself out. Shigeo Kageyama, Mob, is not an ordinary protagonist. He is bashful and clumsy and has feelings so tightly corked that the moment they are sprayed out he shakes the earth. The fantastic psychic battles and the gorgeous animation are not the only things that make this anime special, but the way it touches upon loneliness, control, and clumsy experience of growing up. It is funny and emotional, absurd but sincere. Not one episode does not make you think, laugh, and even cry. Whether you have ever been misunderstood, the story of Mob would be too close to your heart.
Story Summary and My Review
Mob Psycho 100 is based on the story of Shigeo, a boy in the middle school and with dreadful psychic abilities. He is boring and unfeeling, yet he has a storm inside his heart. He is part-time employed by Reigen Arataka, a so-called psychic, who is in reality a scam man but also a remarkably sagacious teacher. Reigen exploits his ability to operate his exorcism business with the powers of Mob, but on the other hand also teaches Mob to do more than combat spirits and to deal with his emotions, empathy, and moral strength.
The plot may seem disorderly, but that is what it makes it so good. There is no way you can be sure of what will be next. One way, you are following Mob in tackling ordinary issues in school, and the next moment, he is fighting off evil spirit or having confrontations with mighty espers that desire to take over the world. But, even when it is in its wildest fights, the anime does not become emotionless. The psychic explosions are a reflection of the emotions of Mob - when his emotions reach 100 percent, the world takes action.
The thing about this series that I enjoy the most is the way it combines the absurd comedy and profound character development. An example is Reigen who is a complete fraud, but he is one of the most relatable characters in the whole show. This is because he genuinely cares about Mob and, being under his lie, attempts to save him by not letting his power get to his head. Their relationship turns out to be the emotional support of the narrative. It is ironical that the fake psychic emerges the most emotionally sincere individual in the life of Mob.
The style of art is enormous acclaim as well. On the surface, it appears to be easy, even unnatural. But when the action begins then it is nothing but pure visual energy. Bones Studio did an amazing work of transforming chaotic sketches to emotionally moving explosions. Each battle scene is an alive, it seems to the heartbeat of Mob that colors and movement are dancing. It is not about being perfect but being expressive and that is exactly what the animation is.
The other strength is the writing. The show does not spend time on empty filler. Each arc contributes to the development of Mob. The Claw Organization arc, in particular, is an arc that is pushing him to address the relationship between power corrupting people. The Body Improvement Club demonstrates that being strong is not about muscles or psychic power, but about will. The comic characters also have a sense of purpose, as even the comic characters can teach Mob something about friendship and self-belief.
Music is a large contributor towards tone. The first song "99" by Mob Choir fits perfectly well. It is hyperactive, a little weird, and emotional, which is precisely the same as the anime itself. The music alternates between serenity and insanity, and you can feel all the mood alternation that Mob goes through.
As the story goes on, you begin to see Mob evolve. He remains silent, yet starts to open-up, befriend people and accept himself. It is that transformation that is the true core of the show. The combats between the psychics are thrilling, yet the struggles inside Mob are the strongest. He gets to know that being strong does not mean to repress emotions but rather to know them.
At the conclusion of the first season you do not simply observe an esper that is getting stronger. You see a boy learning how to live, love and forget about fear. The second and third seasons are a continuation of that expansion in the most splendid way as they build on the same theme emotional honesty is the real power.
In my opinion, Mob Psycho 100 is a masterpiece in the form of a comedy. It is strange, noisy, ridiculous at times, yet on top of it all, it is very human.
Recommendation?
Mob Psycho 100 is an anime that every person who has never seen it is deprived of a great number of emotional nuances. It has got everything one who loves One Punch Man can want to have something that is more heartfelt or one who wants some hysterics and serious storytelling. It might be slow in the beginning, but it is worth it, the pacing, in each episode, is an anticipation of something worthy of the time.
The best thing about this anime, in my opinion, is the way it can be addressed to every person who ever felt lost in his or her feelings. The experience of Mob is a reminder that it is all fine to be emotional, to fail, and to develop. Nothing could be achieved without kindness and that is the lesson that will stick with you even after the last episode.
I would most definitely recommend it. Action, comedy or heart-touching stories, Mob Psycho 100 has it all. You need to give it a watch and you will laugh, cry and perhaps even see a little of yourself in Mob.

Mob Psycho 100 es un anime del que toda persona que nunca lo haya visto se priva de una gran cantidad de matices emocionales. Tiene todo lo que alguien que ama One Punch Man puede querer: algo más conmovedor o alguien que busque un poco de histeria y una narrativa seria. Puede que al principio sea lento, pero vale la pena, el ritmo, en cada episodio, es una anticipación de algo que merece la pena.
Lo mejor de este anime, en mi opinión, es la forma en que puede dirigirse a cualquier persona que alguna vez se haya sentido perdida en sus sentimientos. La experiencia de Mob es un recordatorio de que está bien ser emocional, fracasar y desarrollarse. Nada se puede lograr sin amabilidad y esa es la lección que te quedará incluso después del último episodio.
Definitivamente lo recomendaría. Acción, comedia o historias conmovedoras, Mob Psycho 100 lo tiene todo. Tienes que verlo y te reirás, llorarás y quizás incluso veas un poco de ti mismo en Mob.
Definitivamente, para mí, Mob Psycho 100 es una obra maestra. Se puede decir muchas cosas de su creador (ONE) o del estilo de dibujo que tiene, pero de algo que sí hay que admitir es que este mangaka es un GENIO para crear historias con personajes inolvidables. Ya lo hizo con One Punch Man y ahora lo consigue de nuevo con Mob Psycho 100.
Me encanta el equilibrio perfecto que consigue de comedia, drama, acción y suspenso. También cómo presenta y construye persojanes únicos que se escapan siempre del plano esperado en el que deberían de estar. Enemigos como Hoyuelo que al final se convierte en un antagonista mejor desarrollado que todos los personajes de JJK, el "maestro" de Mob que terminó siendo un fraude todo este tiempo y al final consigue una redención insuperable o el mismo crecimiento que tiene Mob a lo largo de la serie. No hay personaje en este anime que no nos dé algo para contar, la verdad.
