Story Summary and My Review

The book opens with Gabimaru, a shinobi and one of the notorious people in the history of Japan named Gabimaru the Hollow, who is sentenced to death. Through it he is fed up with killing, fed up with living and nearly longing to die. Despite proclaiming about his emptiness, there is one thing that he desires: reuniting with his wife who is the only person who treated him well. This desire of being loved turns out to be his wordless cause of continuing to breathe. His life changes when an executioner called Sagiri of the Yamada clan realizes there is a desire to live hidden in him and provides him with redemption.

Some of the criminals including Gabimaru are proposed a deal. They have to travel to an enigmatic island named Shinsenkyo which is lauded to have the elixir of immortality. Should they come back with this elixir to the shogunate they shall gain liberty. Yet this is not paradise on the island It is the land of all sorts of weird animals, plants and disgusting protectors. It is like entering a weird dimension of hell and heaven together. With every step, it is a gamble of death as the island presents a trap of its own as its beauty baits people into it.

Hell s Paradise is special as it is able to incorporate some amount of brutality alongside emotion. Each inmate on the island has some murky history and most are not angels. There are cold-blooded killers, some are driven with greed and some are in search of a second chance. Even in their brokenness, there are the most paltry elements of humanity. One example is Gabimaru who although was a killer, carried the memory of his wife as a delicate flame that led him through the hell. On the contrary, Sagiri has to go through the inner conflict and resist the idea of being an executioner, yet trying not to lose her kindness. Their romance turns out to be one of the greatest forces in the story.

The combats are harsh and unreasoning. Compared to a lot of action anime, Hell’s Paradise demonstrates that there is always a chance of a protagonist death despite all of their power. A step, a moment of indecision and a character is gone. The acts of violence are coarse at times and even shocking, yet never gratuitous. It is one of the harsh realities on the earth. Watching it I found myself holding my breath at times and not knowing whether or not any one would survive at all.

The island itself nearly seems a vital entity The monsters are both ugly and beautiful and are a hybrid of a human, plant and animal features. This is the kind of accumulated stress in the atmosphere one that makes one feel like a paradise is out to get those who step into it. It shows that no matter how bad the place you are, one glimmer of love can sustain one.
