The Power of Skills: My Journey of Learning and Growth

I have over the years learned to understand that a skill is one of the greatest things that an individual can possess. Skills are treasures, which can never be stolen away. They provide you with a sense of purpose, confidence and direction in life. There are those people who are born with some gifts whereas others are forced to acquire their own in the course of time.

In my case, I have acquired various skills out of practice, consistency and curiosity. All these skills have influenced me in either way or other and have prepared me to be of some use to myself and to people who surround me.

Writing is one of the initial skills that I acquired. As a youngster, I enjoyed reading stories, articles and even motivational quotes. I used to think about the way people could think of such beautiful words that could penetrate hearts and awaken minds. It is that curiosity which has led me to begin writing.

The beginning was not simple as I could not flow easily with my words and at times I would have no ideas. But I never gave up. I continued reading, watching and practicing. Gradually, I started to write more well. It is now a part of my life writing that will help me express my thoughts, share knowledge, and meet other people in other places.

The other skill that I have developed is the ability to speak in front of people. I used to feel a shy person who feared to speak in front of other people. I used to have a fast beat of the heart whenever I was standing up to speak and shaking hands. However, I realized that I had to fight that fear in order to become a self-assured individual.

That is why I began volunteering to talk at events and church services. Whenever I spoke I improved a little. I am now capable of speaking before a crowd with a calm and confident attitude. The public speaking is what enabled me to talk more fluently, chair a discussion, and even inspire others.

Another thing that I learned was graphic designing, which turned out to be one of my most creative and fun abilities. I began learning it since I also wanted to create posters and flyers in my projects without necessarily paying someone. I found free software and started playing around with colors and shapes, as well as fonts.

I encountered tutorials, did everyday exercises, and extracted lessons. What started as a mere interest has now become one of the things that I would have to proudly regard as a professional skill. I have created event flyers, posts on social media, as well as even logos of small brands. Whenever I find my designs in use at some place, I feel proud about the efforts and time that I took.

Leadership is another skill that I have acquired. Leadership does not only involve giving instructions; it involves responsible, leading and being an example to others. This skill has been acquired by me when working in groups, volunteering, and hosting events. I also found out that a genuine leader should be tolerant, sympathetic, and disciplined. As a leader, I have been able to know how to deal with people, resolve issues and take pressure without losing track.

Besides these, I have learned to cook, as well. This may not seem complicated, however, cooking has taught me patience and creativity. I was not taught how to cook, I just wanted to have independence and self-reliance. Initially, I used to do a lot of mistakes occasionally the food would be either too salty or undercooked. However, as time and practice went on, I improved. I am now able to make tasty food and even experiment with new recipes.

I have also learned all these skills which have made me realize the importance of time, effort and persistence. Skills do not come out of the blue, they are acquired through passion and practice. The time I have spent learning, the mistakes I did, and the obstacles I have overcome in my life have all led to what I am today. I have also discovered that skills are not only used to make money, but also to enrich oneself, and to serve the society.

To sum up, I would say that all people are to find time to explore their abilities and nurture them. It can be photography, singing, fashion designing, or even digital marketing, all the skills are worthwhile.

The important thing is to be willing to learn and to practice in order to discipline. Skills provide us with authority, autonomy and identity. The skills that I acquired to date are something that I am proud of, and I am continuing to learn as I am convinced that I will never stop learning. The more the abilities the more gateways open to you in life.

Your discovery is apt. Skills often becomes beneficial when we first want to utilize it in problem solving instead of profit.

I read this very interesting post of yours. I'd like to leave a comment here saying that having multiple skills saves lives these days. That is, if someone can do several things well, they have a better chance of getting by than someone who can do just one thing very well. I also agree that we need to continually learn new things precisely because the world is changing and transforming. Just as we exercise to keep our bodies fit, we must do the same with our brains by constantly learning new things. !DIY
