What I Would Tell Anyone Leaving School Today (My Honest Advice)

Namaste my people,i believe we are having a great weekend and happy sunday.

To be very honest, if someone asked me what advice I would give to someone who is finishing school today, I would first take a deep breath. Because the truth is, things are not easy at all especially here in Nigeria. It’s no longer just about finishing school, it’s more about what you are going to do after school that will determine how your future turns out.

When I was still in school, I used to think that as soon as I graduated, a job would be waiting for me. But after NYSC, reality hit me hard. Jobs are not as available as we thought. I submitted so many CVs. Some companies would say I didn’t have enough experience. And I used to ask myself, “How will I get experience when nobody wants to give me a chance?”

So, my first advice is don’t rely only on your certificate. Yes, education is very important, but with the way things are in Nigeria right now, you also need to learn a skill. Anything you can do graphic design, writing, makeup, tailoring, coding, baking, hairdressing can be your backup plan. That skill might help you survive when your degree alone cannot.

Another important thing I would advise is, try to start something small if you can. The economy is tough, and many people are waiting for big opportunities. But sometimes, it’s the small things we start that grow into something bigger. You can sell something, create something, offer a service, and earn a little money. Don’t feel ashamed. Honest work is never a crime.

Also, do not let pressure get to you. Many people pretend that their life is perfect after school, but that’s not always true. Some are still struggling silently. Move at your own pace and focus on your personal journey. Social media can make you feel like you’re not doing enough, but please take your time. Even slow success is better than fake success.

One thing that really bothers me about our education system in Nigeria is that we are taught a lot of things that we may never use in real life. Sometimes I ask myself what all the big grammar and theories helped me with when most companies are not even looking for that. I believe the system needs to be improved ,it should teach more practical and real-life skills that prepare us for life after school, not just how to pass exams.

Finally, I would say build your mind. Nigeria can be frustrating if you are not mentally strong. Stay close to positive people and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Opportunities still exist, but you have to be smart and ready for them.

So if you’re leaving school today, congratulations, but also prepare yourself. You are entering a different world now. Don’t be afraid, just plan well, learn useful things, and keep pushing. It may be tough, but you will find your way just like the rest of us are still trying to find ours.
