Sometimes, the things we take for granted are the very things that save us when we least expect it. That’s how I felt recently when I discovered, in the most unexpected way, the quiet power of technology. It all started when I traveled home to celebrate the Salah festival with my mom and siblings. It was special, not just because of the celebration, but because my mom’s younger sister also came to join us. We wanted this Salah to be different, to create memories we’d laugh about later. That’s when she suggested we try something new—something we had never done during Salah before. Her idea? Making egg rolls. Simple, right? But somehow, time ran away from us. Between the cooking, cleaning, and festivities, we didn’t get around to making them.

The day before I was to return to school, I looked at the bag of flour we had bought for the egg rolls. Something in me didn’t want it to go to waste. I asked my aunt if I could take it back to school with me. I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d use it for—after all, I wasn’t some snack expert—but deep down, I had this small desire to learn. Maybe, I thought, I’d surprise myself.Days passed, and the flour sat in my room, untouched. Then one afternoon, I remembered my friend who loves puff-puff. The idea hit me: Why don’t I try making puff-puff? The problem? I had never made it before. I’d never even watched someone mixing the ingredients in real life. But this is where technology stepped in.

Without thinking too much, I grabbed my phone and opened TikTok. I searched for puff-puff recipes, and in minutes, I was watching videos of people mixing, turning, and frying the batter. I watched closely—how they measured, the consistency of the mixture, and how they knew when the oil was hot enough. The way they made it look so easy gave me confidence. I can do this, I told myself. When I started mixing my own ingredients, I had this urge to take pictures of the process. I thought it would be nice to document my small adventure. But then fear crept in. What if I mess this up? What if it doesn’t come out right and my roommate laughs at me? The truth is, I didn’t even tell her it was my first time trying. I kept that part to myself because, honestly, I didn’t want anyone to make fun of me if it failed. So, I focused on trusting the process. I followed what I saw in those videos, step by step.

And to my surprise, the puff-puff came out so nice. Golden brown, soft, and tasty. I couldn’t believe it. My roommate was even asking for more! I felt so proud, and in that moment, I silently thanked technology. Without those videos, without the simple guidance I got from strangers online, I probably wouldn’t have tried at all. This experience taught me something bigger than just how to make puff-puff. It reminded me that technology is more than scrolling and chatting—it’s a tool that can help us break fears, try new things, and discover hidden parts of ourselves. Sometimes, all it takes is one search, one video, or one tutorial to change what you believe you’re capable of.Have you ever tried something new because of what you learned online? Maybe a recipe, a craft, or even a skill? Share your story—let’s learn from each other and celebrate the small wins that technology helps us achieve every day.
