Feathered Friends Contest Round 231/The whistling heron (Eng/Esp)

avatar

Greetings friends, delighted to participate in round #231 of the community Feathered Friends, where @nelinoeva invites us to participate with a free theme.

When I go to the Michelena Park in the city of Maracay, to walk and walk my dog Isis, I find several species of herons.

On this occasion there were two species, a large heron called Garza chiflona or whistling heron (Syrigma sibilatrix) and a smaller one the Tero or Alcaravan (Vanellus Chilensis).

Both species were in an open grassy area and were in pairs. It was difficult for me to take close up pictures of them because they would fly away when I approached and my dog would scare them away.

The whistling heron is so called because of the loud whistling sound it emits and that allowed me to see that apart from the pair that was looking for food in the open grassy area, there was another heron of this species mounted on a branch of a large tree, I think it was a flamboyant tree. There I took several pictures of it, even though it was quite high up, but it remained still. This is my favorite photo

I was almost satisfied with my pictures, when I heard her whistle again and this time closer. I turned to look and she was standing on a fence that separates the park area. I took the opportunity to get a little closer and managed to take some more pictures until it flew away.

It caught my attention that this heron was apparently alone but it was calling the other herons with its whistle.

This species inhabits the Venezuelan plains and prefers areas with little flooding. It has very characteristic colors. Its bill is pink and blue. Its eyes are yellow. And it has a tuft of feathers on its head.

The other little egret is running quite fast and was also in a pair. I managed to take some pictures of it without getting too close.

In this rainy season I see these herons more often than in the dry season, when they migrate to other areas where they can get more food.

I love to see them calm and protected inside the park and free to fly.

Thank you very much for reading
