Entrada al Concurso de crónicas reales de Literatos | El Curioso Caso de Henrietta Lacks
Saludos, estimados amigos escritores de #Literatos. Hoy quiero unirme a la iniciativa propuesta por su comunidad para hablarles un poco sobre el caso de Henrietta Lacks, una mujer que, a pesar de que murió muy joven, ha salvado más vidas y ha marcado un antes y un después en la ciencia moderna gracias a las células que poseía, las cuales la hacen inmortal.
Greetings, dear fellow writers of #Literatos. Today I want to join the initiative proposed by your community to tell you a little about the case of Henrietta Lacks, a woman who, despite dying very young, has saved more lives and marked a turning point in modern science thanks to the cells she possessed, which make her immortal.
Ella era Henrietta Lacks, una mujer afroamericana que murió de cáncer de cuello uterino a los 31 años. Cuando entró al centro médico Johns Hopkins por un fuerte dolor en su vientre, le hicieron unos exámenes y resultó que tenía un tumor en su cuello uterino.
Tras realizarle otros estudios y tomar una muestra del tumor sin su consentimiento por allá en los años de 1951 (al parecer era algo común de hacer este procedimiento así) y más aún siendo ella una mujer de color y de clase media, el doctor que le extrajo la muestra notó que las células de su tumor tenían algo diferente a las que normalmente se conocen.
She was Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman who died of cervical cancer at the age of 31. When she went to Johns Hopkins Medical Center complaining of severe abdominal pain, tests revealed a tumor on her cervix.
After further examinations and a sample of the tumor taken without her consent back in 1951 (apparently, this was a common practice), especially given that she was a Black woman from a middle-class background, the doctor who extracted the sample noticed that the cells in her tumor were different from those typically found in cervical cancer.

So, after observing that Henrietta's cells were reproducing instead of dying, researcher George Otto Gey undertook a long-term study of them.
But the saddest part of Henrietta's case is that no one gave her or any of her family members any relevant information about what her cells were doing. This could technically be considered the theft of living cells, which have been so exploited that, had they known about it earlier, her family would be multimillionaires.
Pocos meses después de haber sido diagnosticada de cáncer de cuello uterino, Henrietta Lacks falleció tras su corta lucha contra esta enfermedad. La sometieron a radioterapia y luego a rayos X. Lamentablemente, su organismo no soportó tanto tratamiento abrasivo.

Henrietta Lacks passed away a few months after being diagnosed with cervical cancer, following a short battle with the disease. She underwent radiation therapy followed by X-rays. Sadly, her body could not withstand such harsh treatment.
This leads me to believe that when she was diagnosed with cancer, it was close to metastasizing, so no treatment would have saved her life. However, thanks to her, thousands of lives have been saved because of the legacy she left behind.
Henrietta dejó un esposo viudo y cinco hermosos hijos. Y no fue sino hasta agosto de 2023 que, tras un largo camino recorrido por su familia, lograron llegar a un acuerdo económico y confidencial con la empresa biotecnológica Thermo Fisher Scientific para que le hicieran el primer pago de muchos por el enriquecimiento injusto derivado de las células HeLa.
Henrietta left behind a widowed husband and five beautiful children. And it wasn't until August 2023 that, after a long struggle by her family, they reached a confidential financial settlement with the biotechnology company Thermo Fisher Scientific, receiving the first of many payments for the unjust enrichment derived from the HeLa cells.
La historia de Henrietta y su familia resulta bastante triste y cargada de abuso por parte de la medicina, a pesar de que sus células han salvado millones de vidas tras ser usadas para curar otros tipos de cáncer, elaborar vacunas contra enfermedades que antes eran mortales y también muchos, pero muchos medicamentos que han ayudado a mejorar la calidad de vida de todo ser humano.
24 años después de la muerte de Henrietta, los investigadores a cargo de manejar sus células no pudieron trabajar peor, al pedirles muestras de sangre a la familia de ella para evaluar si ellos también poseían la misma condición que su madre y además sacar más provecho de esa situación. The story of Henrietta and her family is quite tragic and rife with abuse by the medical establishment, even though her cells have saved millions of lives by being used to cure other types of cancer, develop vaccines against previously fatal diseases, and create countless medications that have improved the quality of life for all human beings.
Twenty-four years after Henrietta's death, the researchers in charge of handling her cells could not have handled things worse. They asked her family for blood samples to assess whether they also had the same condition as her, hoping to further exploit the situation. The greed and power associated with these cells were ever-present, but not for a moment did they consider her family.
60 años después de su muerte, fue publicado un libro titulado La vida inmortal de Henrietta Lacks de Rebecca Skloot y en 2017 sacaron una película basada en dicho libro. Se le han hecho múltiples monumentos y reconocimientos mundiales, ya que gracias a sus células reproductivas de manera imparable, es que se marcó un antes y un después en la ciencia moderna.
Ella, sin duda, merece ser recordada como la mujer que ha salvado más vidas en el mundo y también que, a pesar de que en este mundo hay muchas personas que quieren obrar mal ocultando la verdad, esta siempre sale a la luz y actualmente la familia se está lucrando del legado que dejó Henrietta.
Sixty years after her death, a book titled The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot was published, and in 2017, a film based on it was released. She has been honored with numerous monuments and worldwide recognition, as her unstoppable reproductive success marked a turning point in modern science.
She undoubtedly deserves to be remembered as the woman who has saved more lives than any other in the world. And while many people in this world try to conceal the truth, it always comes to light, and her family is currently profiting from her legacy.
