Why I choose to study Psychology. #257

Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today’s topic is from Ladies of Hive, which says:

If you were told you had won a scholarship to study or learn something new, what would you like to learn and why, so let’s dive in.

Honestly, if I were told that I had won a scholarship to study or learn something new, I would choose to study Psychology. The reason why I would choose psychology is because it is the study of human behavior and the mind. I started having interest in psychology when I was in 100 level, and psychology was among the courses I was offering then. Like I said, psychology is about understanding human behavior and the mind.

For me, psychology is not just about reading minds or behavior. It is about understanding why people act the way they do, why they get angry easily, and so on. Psychology is a wide course on its own; that’s why many people are studying it in school.

Honestly speaking, in this world we have a lot of people going through a lot such as stress, depression, anger, and anxiety. But most times they keep it inside because they don’t know who to talk to or share their burden with. Some people, because of depression, start harming themselves, and some even try to commit suicide. That’s one of the reasons why I want to study psychology, so that I can be able to know people's pain and what they're passing through.

For example, I have a guy in my department who has an anger issue. Just don’t try to touch him, he will snap at the person or even shout. Because of that, nobody wanted to talk to him. Personally, I couldn’t try to initiate a conversation with him because I didn’t want to be his next target. But imagine if I had more knowledge of psychology beyond what I was taught in 100 level, maybe I would have approached him, knowing deep inside me that he is probably passing through a lot, and that’s why he behaves that way.

If I had known, I would have chosen to study psychology in the university instead of sociology, but I’m still happy I’m studying sociology. To me, studying both is not a bad idea.

Another reason I would choose psychology is that it can be applied in almost every field, the same way sociology can also be applied. For example, a teacher in school who has little knowledge of psychology will know how to deal with students better, because not all students learn the same way. Among students, we have slow learners and fast learners. We also have quiet, shy, and stubborn students, as well as bold and outspoken ones. Some need extra attention before they can understand what they’re being taught. A teacher with psychology knowledge will be able to handle all these differences without frustration.

Another reason I would like to study psychology is because it will help me understand myself better. Sometimes I act in a certain way that even I don’t understand. There are also times I get angry too quickly without knowing why.

Studying psychology through a scholarship will also give me the chance to help young people. We know that many young people today are facing peer pressure. Because they want to fit in, they end up doing things that's bad. With psychology knowledge, I would be able to help them make better choices, so that they won’t give in to peer pressure again.

In conclusion, there are a lot of things under psychology, but I will stop here because I believe I have expressed my reasons for choosing psychology. To add a little more, learning psychology would make me more useful to myself, my family, my friends, and also my community.
