‎‎The protagonist of this anime Takashi Natsume has been able to see spirits or Yōkai due to his childhood. This made him ignored and lonely in the society. One day, he comes to know that his grand mother Reiko Natsume had noted the names of spirits in a book- the one called the "Book of Friends". The spirits are being liberated by Natsume through giving back their names. This way, he gets to know the pain, the connections and experiences about the lives of the spirits.
