RE: “Akira”, when a (supposed) dystopia portrays an imminent chaotic (though unknown) future.

This is definitely a masterpiece not only of Japanese animation, but also of the science fiction genre and the seventh art. Akira was such a huge success that it not only took anime to new horizons in its time with the second great wave and all that; but it also revolutionized the industry itself. In terms of film, it is an undisputed and unparalleled icon of the genre. Its influence is such that more than one generation was directly or indirectly shaped by this masterpiece.
In my case, I didn't see Akira until I was older a few months ago, and I completely regret not having seen it much sooner. But one thing I am sure of is that, when I saw it, I understood why it is so famous and how it has managed to influence the world of cinema and current popular culture. Both its plot and its mix of dystopia with action and hoverbikes are elements that have managed to define an entire genre ever since. I completely agree with you that this movie should be seen a thousand times before you die, seriously.
Good review.
