Hey there, Hive friends

When I go out to take photos on the street, it's not always sunshine and rainbows. Most of the time, strange things happen to me, some funny and others not so much. I know it's typical of this type of photography, where you're in direct contact with people, but I've had to develop strategies to adapt. Today I bring you a little behind-the-scenes look: some anecdotes that happened to me while taking these pictures. Mainly, the questions people ask me. Let me tell you about them.

Qué tal, amigos de Hive
Cuando salgo a hacer fotos en la calle no todo es color de rosas. La mayoría de las veces me suceden cosas curiosas, unas graciosas y otras no tanto. Sé que es típico de este tipo de fotografía, donde uno está en contacto directo con la gente, pero he tenido que ir desarrollando estrategias para adaptarme. Hoy les traigo un pequeño detrás de cámara: algunas anécdotas que me sucedieron al hacer estas imágenes. Principalmente, las preguntas que me hacen las personas. Les cuento.

I was excited about a painting on the wall because I found it really interesting, and suddenly a man stood next to me—I guess the owner of the place—and asked me, "Why are you taking pictures?" Who do you work for? Are you a freelance journalist?

Estaba yo emocionado con una pintura en la pared, porque realmente me pareció interesante, y de pronto se me paró un señor al lado —supongo que el dueño del lugar— y me pregunta: “¿Por qué haces foto?” ¿Para quién trabajas? ¿Eres periodista independiente?

The site was, in theory, a place to dump waste, but it stays there for a long time. Of course, that caught my attention. Not only mine, but also that of the neighbors in the neighborhood, who looked at me with intrigue from a distance.

El sitio era, en teoría, un lugar para tirar desechos, pero allí permanecen durante mucho tiempo. Claro, eso me llamó la atención. No solo a mí, sino también a los vecinos del barrio, que desde la distancia me miraban con intriga.

When bicycle taxi drivers see me with my camera, they think I'm a foreigner and immediately try to offer me a ride. But when they notice my Cuban style, they glare at me. "Look at him, pretending to be a foreigner!"

Los chóferes de bicitaxis, cuando me ven con la cámara, piensan que soy extranjero y enseguida intentan ofrecerme un recorrido. Pero cuando notan mi estilo cubano, me asesinan con la mirada. “¡Míralo, cómo se hace el extranjero!”

I remember taking this photo at the entrance to a small market, and someone asked me, "Are you an inspector? Are you here to give me a ticket?"

Recuerdo que estaba haciendo esta foto a la entrada de un pequeño mercado, y alguien me preguntó: “¿Eres inspector? ¿Vienes a ponerme una multa?”

Y, por supuesto, nunca falta la clásica. “¿Un dólar, un dólar, un dólar?” Eso, por andar haciéndome el extranjero.

On the other hand, those walking alone on the street can be the most tragic. "Hey, why are you taking my picture?" Come on, walk, or I'll call the police! It's happened to me several times. And the funny thing is that, as soon as they see a foreigner with a camera, their expression changes, and they even smile.

En cambio, los que caminan solos por la calle pueden ser los más trágicos. “¡Oye, ¿por qué me haces una foto?” ¡Dale, camina, o llamo a la policía! Ya me ha pasado varias veces. Y lo más curioso es que, al instante, ven a un extranjero con una cámara… y les cambia la cara, hasta les sonríen.
