It's Hot in Havana: Kids, the Sea, and Risk / Monomad Challenge [Eng/Esp]

Hey, friends, how's it going?

The heat in Havana has been unbearable these last two months, so many young people have found refuge in the sea. But what worries me most is how they do it: they run from the road and jump into the water in dangerous places, while one stays behind to keep an eye out for the police. Be careful, because this is not only illegal, but also extremely risky. Several young people have already died. One of them told me that going to the beach is almost impossible because it's so far away and so difficult to get there, so they end up here. At first glance, it seems like just another summer adventure, but in reality it's something that deserves our attention. This has become almost a popular attraction in the afternoons. How crazy!

El calor en La Habana ha sido insoportable estos últimos dos meses, así que muchos jóvenes han encontrado refugio en el mar. Pero lo que más me preocupa es cómo lo hacen: corren desde la carretera y se tiran al agua en sitios peligrosos, mientras uno se queda vigilando por si aparece la policía. Ojo, que esto no solo es ilegal, sino que también es súper arriesgado. Ya han muerto varios chicos. Me contaba uno de ellos que ir a la playa es casi imposible por lo lejos que es y lo complicado que es llegar allí, por eso terminan aquí. A simple vista, parece una aventura más del verano, pero en realidad es algo que merece nuestra atención. Esto se ha vuelto casi una atracción popular en las tardes. ¡Qué locura!

And the most impressive thing is that most of them are 10 or 12 years old.

It has even become an almost spectacular routine; in the afternoons, everyone gathers and does it in the busiest places.

Hasta se ha vuelto una rutina casi espectáculo, en las tardes ya todos se reúnen y lo hacen en los lugares más transitados.

Most of these kids end up at the police station at some point for their maritime stunts... but they do it again and again. What would be the solution to something like this? I would love to read your comments.

La mayoría de estos chicos, en algún momento, termina en la estación de policía por sus acrobacias marítimas... pero lo vuelven a hacer una y otra vez. ¿Cuál sería la solución a algo así? Me encantaría leer sus comentarios.

A ver desde la experiencia y un poco de madurez (no mucha) te digo que ese es el resultado de no tener nada que hacer, que a esa edad es muuuuy peligroso. Acá donde vivo hacíamos lo mismo, solo que no en el mar sino en los aliviaderos de presa en tiempo de crecida, lo cual es similarmente peligroso o puede que un poco más.

La verdad es que si hubiéramos tenido opciones recreacionales atractivas la inmensa mayoría de nosotros habría hecho otra cosa. Por cierto, muy buenas tus fotografías.

Coincido con usted en su comentario, a veces la juventud no tiene noción del peligro y eso es fatal, y las autoridades en estos lugares, por lo menos aquí en la Habana no son tan rigurosos, a veces dan un escarmiento pero no siempre. Gracias por su comentario 👍

Excelentes fotografías amigo @muhammadhalim. Si existieran lugares seguros para su recreación, tanto niños como jóvenes no adoptarían estás prácticas recreativas tan peligrosas. Saludos y lindo día para usted ☺️

This also reminds me that where I live, there are always kids jumping off very high bridges, but the craziest thing is that they jump into fast-flowing rivers. I can even recommend a local movie called "El Salto de Los Angeles" (The Angels Jump). It kind of portrays what I mentioned earlier.

That's right, my friend. I think it's something that often happens with young people in many countries. When I was a kid, I used to do it in the town where I lived, and now as an adult, I can't believe the dangers I was putting myself in by jumping off those places, but there's one thing that's true about it, and that is that it is fun.
