What do you consider to be the most important lessons we should teach our children?

I begin this piece by thanking God for the parents I had, because through their love, knowledge, and life experiences, they taught me valuable lessons that prepared me for life.

One of the most important responsibilities we have in life is raising children. It is something we cannot delegate to other people. In life, we can change our home, car, job, country, spouse, but one thing we cannot do is change our children. And here I would like to pause to say that those who are not related to us by blood are also our children and, in some way, are also part of our families.

From my own experience as a mother and grandmother, I can recommend several fundamental lessons for children to become men and women with values and principles that shape them as universal citizens.

First lesson:
They should feel respect and love for life, both their own and that of their fellow human beings. For me, this is the foundation for all the others, since those who have self-respect and love for their fellow human beings will not do anything that could harm others.

Second lesson:
Consider your bodies, minds, and feelings as the most valuable gift you have received. From childhood, we must teach them that no one can touch them inappropriately, that they should have a clear sense of right and wrong, that they should learn to say yes or no when their trained conscience tells them what to do, that they should question and reason about anything they are taught, that they should seek the truth and evidence for things, and this is important because we live in a world where there are so many lies.

Third lesson:
That they learn to be happy and to share happiness. Sometimes we focus so much on goals, achievements, and end results that we forget that in the process there are also people and moments that add to happiness and fill their lives with pleasant memories.

I believe that these three lessons for life will be the tools that will help children build their own lives, their identity, their well-being, and above all, use their free will or freedom of choice in the wisest way possible.

Everything else they will learn along the way, in their interactions with other people, family, friends, teachers, strangers, the world around them, and their spirituality.

And as a final piece of advice, don't be afraid to fail, because you learn from your mistakes, those who fall get back up, and when one door closes, others open.

Empiezo este escrito agradeciendo a Dios por los padres que tuve, ya que desde su amor, conocimientos y experiencias de vida me dejaron grandes enseñanzas que me prepararon para la vida.

Una de las responsabilidades más importantes que tenemos en la vida es la crianza de los hijos, es algo que no podemos delegar en otras personas y en la vida podemos cambiar de casa, carro, trabajo, país, cónyuge, pero algo que no podemos hacer es cambiar de hijos, y aquí hago un paréntesis para decir que también son hijos aquellos que no llevan nuestra sangre y que de alguna manera también forman parte de nuestras familias.

Desde mi propia experiencia como madre y abuela puedo recomendar varias lecciones fundamentales para que los hijos lleguen a ser hombres y mujeres con valores y principios que los formen como ciudadanos universales.

Primera lección:
Que sientan respeto y amor por la vida, tanto la propia como la de sus semejantes, para mí este es el fundamento de las demás ya que quién tiene amor propio y amor por sus semejantes no hará nada que pueda dañar a otros.

Segunda lección:
Que consideren sus cuerpos, sus mentes y sus sentimientos como el regalo más valioso que han recibido, desde niños debemos enseñarles que nadie puede tocarlos inapropiadamente, que tengan un claro sentido del bien y del mal, que aprendan a decir sí o no cuando su conciencia entrenada les dicte que hacer, que cuestionen y razonen cualquier cosa que les quieran enseñar, que busquen la verdad y las pruebas de las cosas, y esto cobra importancia por el hecho que vivimos en un mundo donde hay tantas mentiras.

Tercera lección:
Que aprendan a ser felices y a compartir la felicidad, a veces nos concentramos tanto en las metas, en los logros y los finales que olvidamos que en el proceso también hay personas y momentos que suman felicidad y que hacen que su paso por la vida se llene de agradables recuerdos.

Creo que estás tres lecciones para la vida serán las herramientas que ayudarán a los hijos a construir sus propias vidas, su identidad, su bienestar, y sobre todo que usen su libre albedrío o libertad de elección de la manera más sabía.

Todo lo demás lo aprenderán en el camino, en sus interacciones con las demás personas, familia, amigos, maestros, desconocidos, el mundo que los rodea y su espiritualidad.

Y como un consejo final que no tengan miedo a fallar que de los errores se aprende, que quien se cae se levanta, que por una puerta que se cierra otras se abren.
