Medieval Fair - a way to travel through time

The Medieval Fair held in April of this year in the city of Elda surprised us with its size and the range of activities it offered. Although, it is also true that we have never visited this city's medieval fair in its previous editions. Until now, we have only visited similar fairs in other towns, and I posted about those back in time, but this seems to be one of the most important medieval markets in the area.

20250412_104417.jpg

When we arrived at the streets where the stalls were located, there were only a few people around. It was raining, so it justified the weak attendance. While we waited for the rain to stop, we entered the Tourist Info office; there, we received a commemorative coin minted especially for this event, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this fair. We also took a flyer with the schedule of the events and activities.

Finally, the clouds decided to retain the rain for themselves and let the people enjoy the Medieval Fair. The artisans and vendors at the stalls removed and lifted the tarps they had used to protect their products from the rain, opened all the stalls, and people began to arrive. In large numbers.

As I also made a large number of photos, I decided to place a few in a collage, so we can continue with the post without being stuck in the crowd. 😆 Well, in some of the photos, people still can be seen, but here I wanted to mention the colourful flags that were hung above the stalls. I loved to see all those bunting as well as the bigger draperies, representing scenes from the past.

20250412_190047.jpg

These fabrics with printings made the whole experience of strolling around the busy medieval market even more authentic. If you are not sure whether you live in the 21st century or you happened to go back to the Middle Ages, just look up at the sky. Ok, so we are stuck in the past, definitely! 😂

20250412_190251.jpg

Musicians are there as well. I see just a flute and a kind of violin. Where is the piano? 😁

20250412_190258.jpg

More photos of decorative flags... I hope you are still around and not too bored. I already deleted a few photos - sometimes it is needed to stay focused and...

...arrive at the part of food products offered in the market. 😃

The first one, cheese - not my favourite. I don't consume a lot of cured cheese; when I started having some migraine episodes many decades ago, I was advised not to take wine or cured cheese as they can make it worse. On the other hand, I do like fresh cheese and I eat it without having health problems.

20250412_185524.jpg

Sausages - yummy! Sorry, I am not a vegetarian 😅, and sausages elaborated by artisans are very delicious and different to those you buy in the supermarket. We could also try some types, sliced by the vendors.

20250412_193434.jpg

Chocolate... 🤤

20250412_185656.jpg

Coffee and tea, in cute little metal boxes! It smelled very good around this stall.

20250412_190313.jpg

20250412_190329.jpg

I know who will be able to read this: Kürtős kalács. 😇 It was so surreal to see and buy in Spain this Hungarian cake coming from Transylvania. It is a sweet cake, made of yeast dough, which is spun and baked on a baking spit. When it is baked, it is rolled in ground sugar, hazelnuts, nuts, cocoa, coconut, etc. I bought one with nuts. The price was also surreal, hahaha, 6 euros for this cake (it is hollow inside).

20250412_190515.jpg

20250412_190718.jpg

A stall full of sweet fruits! Just make a choice, and as this is a medieval market, I could try to find someone to cast a spell and make the chosen one appear through the screens.

20250412_190414.jpg

20250412_190423.jpg

Apples dipped in melted sugar are a delicacy that was sold when I was little. I haven't eaten it since then, the solid sugar is very hard, and I want to protect my teeth.

20250412_190441.jpg

This stall was selling honey and artisan candies, but also, there was a honey frame from a hive, in a glass box, with bees inside. 🐝

20250412_192401.jpg

Many different artisanal items, soaps, and essential oils can't be missed from a market like this one. I remember seeing similar little houses with chimneys in other markets already, but they are always so cute.

20250412_185506.jpg

These are scented candles and cabinet fragrances in little bags.

20250412_185900.jpg

Quotes and phrases written on wooden boards can be a nice decoration in homes.

20250412_185845.jpg

Of course that I also found a little elephant, and a blue one! 😍

20250412_190227.jpg

Have you ever used kohl? I haven't, although sometimes I look like I have used them. (like natural black around the eyes 😂)

20250412_193209.jpg

Essential oils - a product that must find its place at an artisan market. I didn't see verbena, for example, but there was a nice offer of lavender, mint, citronella, lemon balm, orange, patchouli, eucalyptus, and tea tree.

20250412_193217.jpg

Oh my, we just arrived at vestments that were used in the Middle Ages... If you had enough money or were a knight and wanted to fight for a lady, maybe you could dress something like this:

Oh, the lady in the green dress fell asleep from this post 😂

20250412_191551.jpg

Probably, one would need some weapons too. I imagine that walking around in armour and carrying swords or other bladed weapons was not an easy thing.

20250412_191859.jpg

Torturing tools... 😮 ok, let's skip this part hahaha

20250412_191709.jpg

This Medieval Fair had different activities, like music from those times, parades, workshops, also games. To be authentic, these board games were made of wood (there were also huge wooden chess pieces and the chessboard drawn on the ground) and ropes.

20250412_191910.jpg

Children had fun too in one of the carousels, powered by a person assigned for that. If you made it until here, thank you, and I hope you enjoyed the ride, even if it was not on the carousel but through the stalls of the medieval market.

We can come back to the present now.

Good, my calendar says it is June 3, 2025. :)

Good evening, @mipiano. Although I'm not a kid I liked this trip to the past..., and I laughed a lot with how you narrated about the sleeping woman. I also liked that handmade sausage. I will tell you that I didn't know that in the Middle Ages elephants were blue, you always learn something. At the institutional level I liked the initiative to make a commemorative coin.

A ride that respected the clouds...

Happy evening.

Good morning, @enraizar

Haha, I was making this post for so long that I also felt like already falling asleep haha, like the green dress 😂

I didn't know that in the Middle Ages elephants were blue,

Me neither, but for sure we learned something new now 😂

Happy day to you 😇

Hi. You wouldn't need a verbena because no one was going to have a blood test... and no vampires in sight ;) as far as I know. They self-censor... 😅 and flew to Transylvania, quizás a comer Kürtős kalács. Me encantaría escuchar cómo se pronuncia esto. ¡Ay y probarlo también! 😂 Mi grado de abstracción a través de la pantalla no da como para saber si sabe rico, pero a juzgar por lo emocionada que estás ¡seguro que sí!
It was suggested that we travel back in time, and I (of course) went. Now I'm tired and will rest because the trips have been long.

The fruits always look great! 😍 ¡manzanas rompedientes no! jajaja

And I also really like the tea and coffee stall and the blue 🐘.

Gracias mipiano, me he reído mucho con este post.

Oh, the lady in the green dress fell asleep from this post 😂

Jajajaja... 😄

I wonder if Count Dracula also liked to eat Kürtős kalács hahaha, this pastry coming from his lands must have been one of his favourite desserts 😂

I am sorry the time travel made you tired, it made me too while making it haha, (hope it was not too boring 😅, thank you for reading the post 😇). Did you also fall asleep like the green dress? 😂

What a beautiful festival!!! I've always found medieval events and cities priceless, and this is definitely one that we should see happening more often in more parts of the world! I feel honored to have your post in my community, so thank you for this!

Got to love a wander round a street market like that, always good to support local artisans and businesses, who I hope had a successful day.

May I ask what you use to make the collage? I have yet to find one that I enjoy without having to subscribe!

The day didn't start well for them because of the rain, but luckily it stopped, and so many people came!

Oh my, I don't know how to explain it 😂 I just have saved this markdown and I use it, maybe it is not even a correct one... 😬 not sure if you can see it?

Looks like a nice fair, in our area, I haven't seen them this festive or big yet.

Oh man, I loved these Hungarian cakes SO much from day 1 that I arrived in Budapest. Over the first year, most stalls started to not properly bake the dough and then you had these badly baked ones, so I stopped eating them, To my daughter's annoyance (lol) we loved them with cinnamon.

Recently, I discovered a place selling them in a town nearby, also 5 euros and it was not even tasteful, so a one time purchase. Way overpriced as well.

I'm going to keep my eyes out for any medieval fairs in the region thanks to this post :)

It seems they are too pricy here in Spain, I am not sure many people even know what it is haha. Oh, cinnamon, of course, so tasty! I hope your daughter understood in the end why you stopped buying them, indeed, when the dough is not baked well, it is not nice
Glad you also know what kürtős kalács is 😇

Way too pricy! I think in Hungary, at first we paid 350 HUF for the regular sized ones and it was 550 HUF for the bigger ones.. But I reckon the prices went up as the Hungarian forint became worth less over time as well. Either way, it was our favourite quick snack when passing Nyugati station or the Margit-Sziget bridge where a stall was found.

It's the same with normal cake as well, ruined if not baked properly. She understood, yes but it was a shame because for that money it was a nice snack for a sweet tooth :) lol.

I don't have tons of great memories from living in Budapest but these cakes are definitely one of them, lol.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. You know, I love these markets, and I've never been to one before. How wonderful that you found an elephant as your guide, and the phrase ‘we are what we do to change what we are’ is beautiful.

I also love soft cheeses, and I'm not a vegetarian, so let's eat chorizo and sausages while we play a medieval board game in period costumes, but without any torture... please!

I got lost, yes... among so many people and beautiful decorations in the streets, I got lost, but I saw handmade items and found myself. Thank you for telling me the date; I was able to return from my trip through time instantly. This was spectacular, I loved it!

I am glad you enjoyed this tour!!
The phrases were nice, although there was one I didn't especially like (that people should feel our absence..? it feels like giving troubles to others, I don't know, I felt it that way and it didn't resonate with me haha)
Oh, torture tools. At first, we thought those were normal tools, but then... omg, people were tortured in really bad ways. Terrible, but those are facts.

Thank you for telling me the date

You are welcome, good that you are back, I should change the date now, it is June 4 already 😁

Thank you, @avdesing 🤗

The tools of torture in ancient times were severe... although today there are all kinds of torture... and that phrase that people use to make us feel bad is like making them suffer, I don't think so... Now that I look at it, it's the 4th, but I don't know if it's Wednesday or Thursday, ha ha ha.

Please go back to that time (I mean fair) and find someone to cast a spell and make those fruits appear on this side, well ...and by the way the sausages, chocolate, coffee, tea, cheese (fresh is better) but I also like those too. Para completar el pedido que mandé también un lindo elefante azul 😆. Me encantó este viaje en el tiempo, gracias Mipiano 🤗.

PS: Oh, I almost forgot the Kürtős kalács. Lo que no pueda comer yo se lo comen Oli y Eddyss 🤣.

Ok, I am going to start the engine of the time machine and go back again in time hehehe :D I would bring all of those, and I know that kürtős kalács would not be good for you, but for Oli and Eddyss yes. 😇
Gracias @mdrguez 🤗
