Alicante - City & Beach... and more :))

There is a city bathed by the gentle waves of the Mediterranean Sea; Moors and Christians shared it for centuries, experiencing times of war and peace. Throughout all that time, the hill of this place was crowned with a fortress, Santa Bárbara Castle. Little remains of the castle now, but the ruins of that site preserve a history that cannot be erased by the passage of time. Anyone wishing to explore it will have to feel a bit of a sweat climbing Mount Benacantil in Alicante, either by taking the stairs through the Santa Cruz neighbourhood or by taking the crowded bus that leads to the top of the hill.

Well, there is also the option of taking the elevator that ascends inside the mountain. But that is not fun. And it is quite expensive.
So, guess which path we took when visiting this castle? 😁
I know this was not a very difficult question so that is right, like any spirited (in mind, but not so much in body) explorer, we chose the path on foot that led us up the stairs towards the blue views over the sea and the yellowish views over the city.

It wouldn't be anything strange or challenging... if it wasn't in the middle of summer when we decided to do that walk to the castle using our own strength. And with my parents-in-law. They didn't complain; however, the thought that we should have taken the elevator came to my mind a few times. They are not young anymore, as neither are we, but it seems that they liked the city and the challenge of seeing these charming streets despite the hot summer day and the difficulty of climbing many stairs.

One of the interesting details you can see in these streets is the presence of many flower pots in front of the houses. Almost all the houses had many plants standing there as guardians, day and night. But one of the houses had a really impressive collection of blue pots. So outstanding.

Among the plants, there was a board stating that La casa de las macetas azules (The House of the Blue Flower Pots) receives more than 200,000 visitors each year. I am not sure if they mean entering the house or just passing by it... but this is the proof I was at least in front of it. And you also have the opportunity to do that!!

Have you heard where the Hive Open Days '26 will be held?
...here... in Alicante!!
And... have you heard that there is a chance to win a tandem jump as well?
A jump? 😱
I completely understand if you are scared of that. How wouldn't you? I also saw those guys who are standing guard with weapons pointed at those who want to try a tandem jump.

Especially this one!

Cannons were also prepared on the edges of the walls of this fortress. It seems that they had heard about our Hive event in advance and are waiting for us with arms for some unknown reason.

But worry you not! I can take this risk and save you all from any possible fear of the tandem jump thingy. I will gladly do it, maybe together with @tinabrezpike, we will be the volunteers for this activity, right Tina? 😁
In any case, now you know. Next year, from April 30 to May 3, this Hive meetup will take place in Alicante, Spain. Last year, we had a great time in Graz, Austria. I still haven't posted about all the places we visited there but those who were there will know that I tell the truth when I say we had an awesome time together. I hope to see all those who came to Graz, but also to meet new people. Anyone who fancies some sunny days in early May (I hope it will be sunny, but you can never know with the weather) is kindly invited. 🌞

Some activities are already scheduled; if you follow @buzzparty, you can see several posts already announcing them, but if you still have some free time, you can also explore around in the city with other Hivers outside of the officially scheduled activities. Alicante is not so big, so you can't really get lost.

If you happen to climb this same path I did with my husband and my parents-in-law, you will found yourslef in the old fortress. As I mentioned, unfortunately, it is not completely preserved.

Even though these guys tried to save the place, there is not much to see if you expect to find a real castle and a well-preserved fortress.

This arch is what is left from an old church...

However, some buildings had the luck to survive the time when the fortress suffered its major destruction in the War of the Spanish Succession, which happened at the beginning of the 18th century.

Other parts, like some towers and walls, were partially restored with newer bricks, so we can clearly see the difference between the old and newer building materials.

The paths between the trees are very cool though. Especially this part was pleasant, to walk in a bit of shade.

Once on the upper part, you can enjoy the views of the sea and or the city itself. The majority of people like to take photos from this viewpoint, called Garita de la Campana.

When we arrived there, there was a little queue. Everyone wanted to have their moments of standing there and taking a photo. We did it too. 😉

From there, you can enjoy the different spots around the harbour and the northern part of the city. Behind this little hill, there is a very famous beach, Playa de San Juan.

And these are the views toward the harbour and the city of Santa Pola. The day I took these photos was not so clear, so we can't see Tabarca Island in this photo, although it is also there. Somewhere. 😆

When we came down to the city (this time with the elevator going down - it is free of charge in this direction haha), we could appreciate once again the view of the castle. Huh, that was a good walk uphill. 😅

If you would like to meet other Hivers and spend a few days here around, Hive Open Days is a way to do so. Maybe you would like to participate in the contest for the tandem jump as well? Great - here are the requirements that @buzzparty suggests in this post:
-Buy your symbolic entry ticket
-Write a post about the event
-Use the tag #HODAlicante
-Be one of the first 25 people to do so

So... see you here in Alicante in 2026?

A truly magical city. Thank you for this wonderful experience!
It has some charm indeed 😉
Thank you for stopping by ;)
My pleasure!
Alicante is heaven on earth. Thank you for these beautiful photos. 😊
It's cold and snowy here in Serbia. If you want to see what it's like here, you can visit my profile and check out my post First snow this winter in Bela Crkva ❄️❄️❄️
It is sunny during the winter as well and it gives it brightness, although it was so cold these last few days, so unusual.
Oh, I did check out your post a few days ago and saw the snow, even commented. You remember, the comparison with the chestnut puree? 😉
I remember now. Sorry, I forgot for a moment. I prefer summer to winter and I was charmed by how nice the weather is in Spain.
I've been talking to the wife maybe she comes with me to the meeting would be a nice trip for our 35th anniversary.
But there are some things i need to look in to first.
Would be nice to be able to go there for a week or so before the big meeting to adjust.
🎉🎉🥳 Congratulations 🥳🎊🎊
Your post has just been curated and upvoted by @Ecency , keep up the good work !
My wife and I are planning our trip there right now and looks like there is plenty to do in Alicante for an extended trip before or beyond the Hive event. Tina may or may not join in for the Hive stuff, she may chill by the hotel pool with a book - we shall see.
Any hotel recommendations @mipiano
Would be nice to have a hotel with airconditioning , wifi on walking distance from the event.
Definitely those things
This sounds like a great plan, @nicklewis
I have never stayed for a night in Alicante, we are always coming by car as we are not so far (like 35-40 minutes by car) but the area to find accommodation that I think would work the best in case of the Hive Open Days are Centre and Ensanche Diputación, I circled them on the map. The Venue is a coworking space called Ulab (Plaça de San Cristóbal, 14), and I also marked it.
This is an area you can walk from the main train station to the venue in like 15 minutes.

@stresskiller
Thanks, this is indeed useful. I’ll have a look later
That would indeed be the best way to come together with your wife 😇
Congrats on your 35th anniversary 🥳
yeah she might not join the event it self , but she can enjoy the week before with me
This is such a great advert for the HOD, if you got a commission for every person you bought on board, I'm sure you will be able to buy the La casa de las macetas azules and rename it as La casa de los pianos azules
Thank you 🤗 La casa de los pianos azules - that would be a perfect home!
But maybe I should try to crack some impossibly difficult quiz in the bank museum you visited and get that gold bar instead of waiting for the commissions 😁
What a beautiful city!! Old but charming Alicante!
Old as a tale 🙂
You must all have heaved a sigh of relief when you got to the top, but what a view!
I wonder just how they tend to the plants in all those blue flower pots; some seem to be out of reach? Lovely though.
Enjoy Hive Open Days @mipiano <3
That is a good question about the plants. Maybe they can reach them from the balcony or they have some hidden irrigation system for watering... no, I know!! The owner's wife maybe has a parasol as well... so she can fly and reach all of them 😜
Thank you dear @lizelle 😇, it would be great to meet you in person one day! ;))
It seems to me that someone likes the color blue, I have no doubt, but I have no proof either, oh no, that's not how it was haha 😂
That's a good place, with good height, to overcome your fear of flying and spread your wings toward infinity and beyond 🦉
Someone indeed loves the blue colour, no proof needed haha
I wish Buhito could come to Alicante and practice this height issue here 😋
U summoned me
You have beautifully narrated the entire journey. The experience of climbing the mountain step by step, the hardships of the heat, the walk with the family, everything made me feel like I was there myself. I liked it a lot, thanks for sharing.
I am glad you liked it, thank you 😌
Hello @mipiano teacher!!.... 😀👋 Awesoma photography stuff here!!!... Applause!

Thank you 😌
I can’t wait for climbing to the Santa Barbara Castle and enjoying that beautiful views… with you!
I think Tabarca has been taken by the pirates. 😆
Hahaha, yes!! The guards in the fortress were too busy threatening us who would like to fly that the pirates took the island in the meantime 😂
Soon, it will be soon 😇, just the spring to come first 😁
I don’t want to fly, you know… 🙄🙈 I prefer to navigate!
You want to navigate
I want to fly
and Mr Mipiano... I think he will be happy to stay on firm ground haha 😆
🤣🤣 I didn't remember this! We'll let him keep our bags. 👜
😆
Incredible place... the castle drove me crazy!!!!
How much does the lift cost? Curious... I think with my knee tendinitis I wouldn't be able to go that high hahaha
I love the place, beautiful... the fortresses and castles I love and those little streets with the pots... what a beauty!!!!😍
It is not as cool as the castle in Malaga, and is much smaller but the views are nice in any case hahaha
It was not just the price of the elevator, but the long queue you have to wait in first if you want to go up. For the 4 of us it would cost 10,80 euros and some 20 minutes of waiting. True, it took us more than 20 minutes to reach the top but at least we saw those little streets with the stairs and spent time together talking.
What is happening with your knee? 😯
I've had tendinitis in my right knee for years due to bad efforts, things I shouldn't have done when I was in Argentina, especially to fix my house before I left and in the trading job I had here... it left me bad. And sometimes the pain gets worse. When everything is fine I go hiking hahaha but I live with it.
It's worth climbing those stairs, the views are beautiful!!!! Thank you!!! I enjoyed it very much!
There are things we learn to live with, that is true. 😉
Por cierto, ¿cómo está tu mamá? Pasó mucho tiempo desde que tenía el esguince, espero que esté todo bien ahora. 🤞
She is fine but just in case she didn't go to the kings parade hahahaha, so she won't sprain herself again. She looks after herself and I look after her, when I can I take her with me on walks. I think this year she will soon have cataract surgery... so I will have a year of nursing. Lots of things this year!
That is important, that she looks after herself. I wish her all the best in the cataract surgery! 🙏
God!
At a certain age you have to be more careful... I hope he recovers soon.
In the case of mum she is also almost completely deaf, so I am also keeping an eye on her, but otherwise she is doing well, I like her to go for walks to distract herself, at least she is better off than in Argentina.

You are very welcome @mipiano! it was well deserved. ☀️
We are already looking forward to reading more about your adventures!
Alicante ♥️ nice city, nice shots!
Hopefully see you and your family here in some 4 months 😇
The houses on the steps are beautiful, I couldn't climb all this steps I would need an escalator fitted. Gorgeous place to live with amazing scenery.
There is an elevator, so that would not be a problem ;)
It is paid while going up and free when going down
Oh that's handy,I would definitely have to use that 😊
What and awesome moment thank you for sharing
Thank you
Good evening @mipiano... I'm glad you walked up, not just to the house with the blue flowerpots, I really liked all the architecture I saw.
I'm also happy that we already have two volunteers for the activity... those guards and cannons look very dangerous. 😱
There won't be much left of the fortress, but what I've seen I've liked. What's left of the church is very evocative with that arch that has withstood the test of time and that small figure you can see, which I think is the Virgin Mary.
The views from the top are beautiful.
Big hug!! 🤗
See you in Alicante.
Good evening @enraizar, of course for the safety of all the other Hivers, I would take the risk as one of the volunteers haha. 🪂😆 And ehat about you? Would you also like to take that risk? 🪂
See you in Alicante soon 🤗, let's hope we can enjoy some better temperatures and leave the winter jackets at home 😂
Good evening @mipiano... I'll think about volunteering. You know more about the temperature than I do... But it's bound to be a wonderful month. 😀
I hope you have a lovely evening and a great weekend. 🤗
Thanks, may you have a nice Friday evening (what is left from it, like some 12 minutes haha) and a great weekend 😇
Gracias!! 🫂

STOPA stunning representation of a city and a beach. I know beaches are almost identical all over the world, but what always sets them apart is the layout of the city next to the beach.
Thank you @aswita.
The access to the beach in the coastal town is important here, especially to the hearbour. But I prefer the beaches that are a bit apart from the city, they are cleaner. 🌊
Your evocation of Santa Bárbara Castle resonates with me like an echo of the history we all share. The journey you undertook, together with your in-laws, is a testament to the fact that challenges, however arduous, become meaningful when faced in company.
The blue flowerpots that adorn the streets are a beautiful reminder that life is found in the details and in the bonds we forge. Just as those cannons hold the memory of the past, we too carry stories and lessons that enrich us.
Hive Open Days '26 presents a unique opportunity to write a new chapter in our collective history. Although fear of the unknown can be overwhelming, it is precisely in those moments that we find our shared strength.
Yeah, let's jump! 😂 This city is so colorful! Oh, and I'm already in love with those soldiers. I think they're just waiting for me to take hundreds of selfies. 😂
Yes, let's jump 😎
The guards are also waiting for the selfies with you, they told me they wouldn't move from there 😁
Better for them 😄
I'm really hoping to be there, at least for one or two days. It depends on boring real life things like having the money, as well as whether I can persuade my wife to shift our normal June trip to Benidorm forward by a month or so 😀
But I'm not sure about the tandem jump. Those cannons make me wonder if it'll be a bit like clay pigeon shooting, with the jumpers as the pigeon. I had a friend who used to take his 4 pounder cannon clay pigeon shooting.... he knew he'd scored a hit if all that came down was fine dust.
It would be nice to meet you and your wife, but true, the beginning of May is still not so warm as June... I hope she agrees to come one month earlier to Spain 🤞
Alicante is great - in my youth I studied in Nice / France as part of foreign country times during university - my girlfried that time in Barcelona and the rest of our studying German bunch in Alicante - hence i had a ongoing travel route from Nice to Alicante - Barcelona. Thanks for reminding @mipiano
Oops, I missed your comment @uwelang, sorry for the delayed response.
Those were the days, right? Cool that you got to meet so many places due to the circumstances 📖
I also remember my university days with joy, although we didn't have that option to study in foreign countries, but would gladly go back to my youth at least for some weeks hahaha and then come back to real time 😂 ok, it sounds quite impossible haha
Thank you and have a nice Sunday evening 😊
This is a lovely post about Alicante, and since you're from there, you know it best! We climbed those stairs twice. The first time, we had to turn back from the Castle entrance because it was closed for the holidays. After two days, we tried again once when it reopened. It was a fun experience, we spent a good time looking at every detail, even though it wasn't a very castle-like castle. But nice activity destination, we enjoyed that walk/climbing. and like to climb one more time. Looking forward to joining this event and also seeing you all. regards :)
