Game Changers Or Resource Drainers? The Economics Of Global Sports
I should be the least person giving a response to a prompt about sports as I'm not one of those interested in it. Well, not totally uninterested as I've found a few sports that are interesting to see but I've never really bothered to know how much cost and benefits are for organizing and hosting a global sport especially in my country, Nigeria.
That has changed now as the prompt made me do a bit of a research, to at least be aware of the estimate for hosting a global sport in my country. I couldn't find a specific amount but I didn't find any small amount of money, there is so much going into hosting these events and it definitely calls for a rethink or maybe a better reallocation.

From my small research, a lot of things have to be put in place for a country to host a global sport events as they will be having so many people visiting, especially foreigners. Trying to make the country look good to their visitors and make the event as good as it should be, the roads and event space are reconstructed for the event.
I've witnessed a lot of road construction to know that so much money goes into making them as fast as possible and still come out looking good. Construction of roads are mainly done to help foster better transportation for foreigners who will be coming for the event, especially for those who would stay back and want to take on tours.
Another aspect is constructing a sport event center that will accommodate the game, the audience and other side attractions for the event to be a successful one. I don't even see how the budget for hosting a global sport event can be reduced in any country it's to be hosted in. But I believe adjustments can be made these reasons.

These events are not just organized to help the players exhibit their passion for the games but economically, these events bring about opportunities to the country. One of the benefits is tourism as foreigners visit the country and explore places and their tours can also have a good impact on the country's hospitality sector.
Another benefits these events bring is, infrastructure. Before the event is hosted, the country gets the chance to create new transportation systems, better sport venues and a lot of other developments that will help to better neglected areas and even attract new businesses which is a positive long term impact.
While there are benefits of spending so much for the global sport events, I think the cost outweigh the benefits. I believe there are more important things the Government should allocate funds for and maybe reduce the amount allocated to sport events. The efforts put into hosting the events shouldn't be stopped as it bring in good revenues.
But attention should also be given to other important aspects for the growth of the country and to attract more tourists when they come around. I think it's a better choice for the country to pay attention to every other aspects that the country is still struggling to make happen.

You're right
For struggling countries, it should be checked how theses funds are allocated and some adjustments should definitely be made so that these funding wouldn't hurt the nations growth.
