John James Audubon exhibit

Yellow Crowned Heron

John James Audubon’s The Birds of America (1827-1838) is probably the most famous of all bird books and is on exhibit at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. . In the summer of 2018, an edition like the Field Museum’s sold at auction by Christie’s for $9.65 million.

Wouldn't you love to find one in your grandparents attic?

Only 120 complete sets of Audubon’s 435 exquisite, hand-colored engravings are known to exist. They were printed on what was, in 1838, the largest paper available — roughly 3 feet by 2 feet per sheet,

Photography was in its infancy in 1838 and Audubon’s work provided naturalists with the opportunity to view lifelike images of birds across North America

"The worse my drawings were, the more beautiful did the originals appear." John James Audubon

The exhibit states that "it is important to recognize the more troubling aspects of his legacy:. he bought and sold enslaved people, plagiarized and exploited natural resources.”

The view through today's lens, has caused many ornithological societies to change their names. The Chicago Audubon Society changed its name to the Chicago Bird Alliance. They hope to create a more inclusive and welcoming organization within the birding community

It's an interesting illustration. It reminds me of why doctors, naturalists, engineers, and biologists of past centuries were taught to draw, as photography didn't exist, and image recording had to be done by hand.

It's interesting that the exhibition has posters in two languages.

Incidentally, I found the point of highlighting the less pleasant aspects of the person in question very interesting and appropriate for maintaining the historical integrity of the legacy.

The U.S is. the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico. Thankfully, I see that being recognized more and more.

I was surprised to see, on a historical map, how much of the southern part of what is now the United States was part of the colonial territories of the Spanish Empire until the end of the 18th century.

In addition, the southern border of the United States has been quite permeable and 'hot' when it comes to the issue of migration, whether legal labor migration or illegal labor migration.

Anyway, at that time, photography would probably be black and white instead of coloured. After knowing these facts and its history, one can really understand its value. The quote is good but the drawings are also wonderful.

It's clear this exhibit was made with a lot of love, and only true bird lovers like you feel it so intensely. It's beautiful, in fact, I'm left wanting to see more 🥰

This community is so beautiful, I see myself participating here in the future. I see a lot of birds, especially on my hiking trails, but I haven't focused on photographing them. I think I'll make a change.

Don't know how I missed this! He made such beautiful drawings and that book would be amazing to own a copy. Unless your great, great, great grandparents were bird enthusiasts and were wealthy enough to buy a copy in the first place. You would be out of luck, just like me! That is so cool that they have a copy in the museum, that is not an inexpensive book, and I could use $9.65 million right about now...
