Ladies of Hive Community Contest #273 | Concurso comunitario de Damas de Hive n.° 273

Happy start to the week to all the ladies in the @ladiesofhive community! Welcome to my blog and my entry in weekly contest #273, with questions posed by @joanstewart. I'll answer the second question:

2️⃣ With technology ever creeping into daily life, how do you plan an optimal home environment, where family are safe within well-organized conditions, spaces where children can play, explore, and discover without your ever watchful eye? Describe opportunities you seek out when presenting that you feel are important to the household.

Creating a home environment in these times of distraction and technology can be more complicated than in the past. Establishing discipline and maintaining interest in one-on-one conversations must be quite a challenge. We live so connected that a day without Wi-Fi is unimaginable. Even the youngest members of the household are affected by the technological wave. This new, invisible modality, or modern society, has changed how we communicate, work, learn, be, and think. We've traded face-to-face conversations for WhatsApp, altered our routines, slept with our phones beside us, and checked social media instead of resting, opting for more screens than conversations and reading. But even so, I believe we can create that home environment by involving the whole family—a place where we feel comfortable, present, safe, and at peace. This can be achieved by including elements and activities like books, magazines, board games, colorful objects, drawings, conversations, toys, cooking together, participating in cleaning and tidying the house, creating, imagining, and supporting one another.

I don't currently have young children, but I have a beautiful granddaughter who is already familiar with screens. When she comes to my house, I try to distract her in other ways. The main thing is to limit my use of devices when we're together. We paint, I teach her numbers and colors, we play, we dance, we sing, I involve her in my garden, I take her to the park, we go for walks, we sing, I let her interact with other children, we climb stairs at the mall. I read her a story; there are many things we can do to help her develop interest and pleasure in something other than technology. I always emphasize to my husband that nighttime is for sleeping, not for staying up late checking social media. It's not that I'm against technology, but I believe we should balance its use, feel free, and give ourselves the opportunity to walk, be present, or chat without so many distractions. We need to understand that the most valuable connection doesn't come with Wi-Fi, but rather from looking at and listening to those around us. Families need less screen time and more quality time to strengthen our emotional bonds; it's not about abandoning technology, that's impossible, but about balancing its use.

@joanstewart.

Remembering when we never had modern technology, now I think it is up to us to remind young parents not to allow watching screens completely take over life itself.

Walks in the park, gardening, talking with family sharing memories, making new or sharing old, how will children know ancestors if we don't share where they come from, to know where they are going.

The time you enjoy with your granddaughter is very precious. As you say, it's not about opposing technology, but rather about finding a way to balance its use, as well as being present with real conversations without so many distractions. Have a wonderful week!
