EL TESORO DE LA AMISTAD - THE TREASURE OF FRIENDSHIP
At the school where I teach, the theme for February was friendship and how much each of our friends meant to us in our lives. Since this year Valentine's Day fell on a Friday, I asked my little ones, “What activity would you like us to do?” Without hesitation, they shouted in unison, “A STORY!”
I laughed because I was almost certain that's what they would choose. They love story days, and so do I, because I see them sitting quietly as they get caught up in the story I'm telling them.
I suggested that since they wanted a story, we should all work together to create it and they should give me three words to use, which were “star,” “moon,” and “book.” So that night I got down to work and started writing.

The next day, I arrived early and set up the room, but I had them come in with their eyes closed and sit down, telling them to open their eyes when I began the story. Once everyone was seated, I began:
A long, long time ago, in the village of “Chiquitines” (that's what I call them), when the trees and flowers danced in the wind, “Luna” appeared, illuminating everyone with her beautiful light. Everyone in the village knew her and eagerly awaited her arrival, as they loved every adventure she had. But she didn't live those adventures alone, because she was always with her best friend, “Star,” wandering around every corner of the village. One night, the moon decided to visit the whispering tree, and to convince Star, she said:
Let's go to the village grandmother's garden and find out what the tree that whispers secrets to the wind has to tell us.
Yes! I love that idea. Let's see what secrets we hear.
It was a hot night, and Moon and Star decided to take a dip in the river before going to Grandma's house in the village. While they were swimming, the water carried a mysterious letter to them. The letter had a message that said:
Both looked at each other confused but with an immense desire to go find it.
What do you think it means that only one of us will be able to get it?
I really have no idea, but it sounds like an adventure, and you know I love adventures.
Despite their slight fear of the unknown, they decided to go in search of the treasure.
Are we sure we want to do this? The forest can be a little scary.
Yes. Besides, we're together, and together we can face anything. Especially if we're going to find treasure. Think of all the nice things we can buy and eat.
In one of the many trees in the forest, they found an owl who, upon seeing them there, knew what they were looking for.
The treasure they seek is something that is built with a pure heart and true loyalty.
Thank you, owl. I think we understand now."
Realizing that their true treasure was their friendship, they decided that no matter what happened, they would always be together.
Star, I think the real treasure is our friendship, and perhaps the letter meant that very few people understand this and, thinking that something else is more valuable, they end up losing their way in selfishness.
You're right, my dear friend Luna. Our friendship is the most valuable thing we have. Thank you for the memories you've given me and for being by my side in every difficult moment.
Suddenly, a violent storm broke out, forcing them to take shelter in a cave where there were also many lost and frightened animals, whom they decided to help and calm down while the storm passed.
When the storm passed, the animals showed them a secret path that led to a small lagoon with a golden chest in the center as a token of their gratitude.
Luna and Estrella swam together toward it without letting go of each other, and when they opened it, they found an old book full of stories about friendship.

With the book in their hands, the two friends returned to Chiquitines, knowing that their friendship was the most valuable treasure. And now every night they read all those wonderful stories of friendship to everyone so that they will be inspired and become true friends.

En la escuela donde enseño, el tema de febrero fue la amistad y lo mucho que significaba en nuestra vida cada amigo que teníamos. Dado que este año el día del amor y la amistad cayó día viernes, les pregunté a mis chiquitines “¿Qué actividad les gustaría que hiciéramos?” y sin pensarlo me gritaron al unísono “UN CUENTO”.
Me reí porque estaba casi segura que era lo que iban a elegir. Les encantan los días de cuenta cuentos y a mí también porque los veo sentaditos en silencio mientras se meten en la historia que les esté contando.
Les propuse que ya que querían un cuento armáramos la historia entre todos y me dieran 3 palabras a utilizar, las cuales fueron “Estrella” “Luna” “Libro”. Así que esa noche me puse manos a la obra y a escribir se ha dicho.
Al día siguiente llegué temprano y les ambienté el salón pero los hice pasar con los ojos cerrados y sentándose para abrirlos al momento que yo comenzara el cuento. Una vez que todos estaban sentados comencé:
Hace mucho pero mucho tiempo, en el pueblo “Chiquitines” (Así les digo a ellos) cuando los árboles y las flores bailaban con el viento, aparecía “Luna” iluminando a todos con su hermosa luz. Todos en el pueblo la conocían y esperaban ansiosos su llegada ya que amaban cada aventura que ella vivía. Pero ella no vivía esas aventuras sola, porque siempre estaba con su mejor amiga llamada “Estrella” paseándose por cada rincón del pueblo. Una noche, a la luna se le ocurrió visitar el árbol de los susurros y para convencer a estrella le dijo:
Vamos al jardín de la abuela del pueblo y descubramos qué tiene para decirnos árbol que susurra secretos al viento.
¡Sí! Me encanta esa idea. Veamos qué secretos escuchamos.
La noche estaba calurosa y Luna y Estrella decidieron darse un chapuzón en el río antes de ir a la casa de la abuela del pueblo. Mientras se bañaban, el agua llevó hasta ellas una carta misteriosa. La carta tenía un mensaje que decía:
Ambas se vieron las caras confundidas pero con un deseo inmenso de ir a buscarlo.
¿Qué crees que signifique eso de que sólo una sola podrá conseguirlo?
La verdad no tengo ni la menor idea pero me huele a una aventura y ya sabes que amo las aventuras.
A pesar del poco de miedo que lo desconocido les causaba, decidieron ir en busca del tesoro.
¿Estamos seguras de que queremos hacer esto? El bosque puede ser un poco asustador."
Sí. Además estamos juntas y juntas podemos enfrentar cualquier cosa. Y más si vamos a encontrar un tesoro. Piensa en todas las cosas ricas que podremos comprarnos y comer.
En uno de tantos árboles del bosque, encontraron a un búho que al verlas por ahí supo a qué iban.
El tesoro que buscan es algo que se construye con el corazón puro y la lealtad verdadera.
Gracias búho. Creo que ahora entendemos"
Ambas al darse cuenta que el verdadero tesoro era su amistad decidieron que, sin importar lo que pasara, siempre estarían juntas.
Estrella, creo que el verdadero tesoro es nuestra amistad y quizás la carta se refería a que muy pocos lo entienden y por pensar que es algo mas valioso terminan perdiéndose en el camino del egoísmo.
Tienes razón mi querida amiga Luna. Nuestra amistad es lo más valioso que tenemos. Gracias por los recuerdos que me has regalado y porque en cada momento difícil has estado a mi lado
De pronto se desató una fuerte tormenta que las hizo refugiarse en una cueva donde también habían muchos animales perdidos y asustados al que ellas decidieron ayudar y calmar mientras pasaba la tormenta.
Cuando la tormenta pasó, los animales como muestra de agradecimiento les mostraron un camino secreto que conducía a una pequeña laguna donde en el centro había un cofre dorado.
Luna y Estrella nadaron juntas y sin soltarse hacia él y al abrirlo encontraron un libro antiguo lleno de historias de amistad
Y así, este libro les enseñó que la verdadera amistad se demuestra en los momentos difíciles y ayudar a los demás te acerca más al tesoro de verdad.
Con el libro en sus manos, las dos amigas regresaron a Chiquitines, sabiendo que su amistad era el tesoro más valioso. Y ahora cada noche les leen a todos esas maravillosas historias de amistad para que se inspiren y sean amigos de verdad.
