Bienvenido octubre, el mes en que seguimos celebrando la gastronomía venezolana. Hay sabores que nos definen como venezolanos, el tequeño -ese palito crujiente y relleno de queso- es uno de ellos. Cada 21 de octubre celebramos a este delicioso pasapalo venezolano que nos acompaña en cumpleaños, bodas, ferias y meriendas. Este año en la 5º edición del #DíaInternacionalDelTequeño festejamos que #ElTequeñoConquistóElMundo.

Hablemos un poco de la historia del tequeño. Hay muchas versiones sobre su origen, pero todas coinciden en que nació en Los Teques, estado Miranda. Una de las más populares nos cuenta que en los años 1920, Josefina Hernández Báez, con apenas 15 años, creó unos enrolladitos de masa rellenos de queso para una fiesta familiar. ¡Fue todo un éxito! Tanto, que la receta se empezó a correr por todo el pueblo.

Fue en los años 60 cuando se popularizó el término tequeño, gracias a los distribuidores que viajaban en tren desde Los Teques a Caracas. Al llegar a la terminal, la gente gritaba: “¡Llegaron los tequeños!” Y así, este aperitivo se hizo famoso… tanto que hoy recorre el mundo. El 21 de abril de 2023, el tequeño fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural de Venezuela.

¿Cómo nació el #DíaInternacionalDelTequeño?

La iniciativa surgió en 2021, gracias a Rafael Mourad y Tania Rimer, directivos de la organización Hecho por Venezolanos, con el objetivo de promover nuestra gastronomía y apoyar los emprendimientos venezolanos en el exterior. Se eligió el 21 de octubre, fecha de la fundación de Los Teques, como homenaje a su lugar de origen.

En su quinta edición, la celebración gira en torno al viaje del tequeño: de Los Teques al mundo. Por eso, octubre se convierte en el #MesDelTequeño, y todos podemos participar. ¿Cómo? a través de diversas actividades:

➡️ Si tienes un emprendimiento, organiza promociones, concursos, degustaciones o descuentos.

➡️ Invita a tu familia, amigos y personas de otras nacionalidades a disfrutar una tarde de tequeños. ¡Descubre cómo este pasapalo se convierte en un puente cultural!

➡️ Participa en la campaña #DonaUnTequeño: prepara una bandeja especial para donar a niños, ancianos o personas en situación vulnerable. ¡Regala alegría!

Del tequeño a la arepa: dos embajadores que conquistaron el mundo

Pues sí, así como nuestra arepa se convirtió en la embajadora de la gastronomía venezolana en el mundo, el Tequeño también conquistó corazones y hoy recorre más de 80 países, presente en areperas, food trucks, ferias gastronómicas y fiestas alrededor del planeta.

En Las 50 Mejores Recetas del Día Mundial de la Arepa, celebramos la diversidad regional, la versatilidad y el poder de unirnos. ¿Y si este octubre celebramos a los dos alimentos juntos?

A veces la arepa es usada como abrebocas o aperitivos para compartir en una reunión. Puedes organizar una tarde de tequeños y arepas con tu familia, amigos y comunidad extranjera. Te recomiendo buscar en el libro la receta de arepitas dulces y rellenarlas con queso rallado.. ¡Son un dúo perfecto! ¡Una tarde perfecta!

El tequeño y la arepa son más que una comida sabrosa. Significan memoria, encuentro y resistencia. Este mes de octubre sigamos celebrando el hecho de que nuestros sabores cruzaron las fronteras y están conquistando paladares aquí y en otras latitudes.

Tequeño: the snack that crossed borders and won hearts

Welcome to October, the month in which we continue to celebrate Venezuelan cuisine. There are flavors that define us as Venezuelans, and the tequeño—that crispy, cheese-filled stick—is one of them. Every October 21st, we celebrate this delicious Venezuelan snack that accompanies us at birthdays, weddings, fairs, and afternoon teas. This year, in the 5th edition of #InternationalTequeñoDay, we celebrate that #TheTequeñoConqueredTheWorld.

Let's talk a little about the history of the tequeño. There are many versions of its origin, but they all agree that it was born in Los Teques, Miranda state. One of the most popular tells us that in the 1920s, Josefina Hernández Báez, barely 15 years old, created some cheese-filled dough rolls for a family party. It was a huge success! So much so that the recipe began to spread throughout the town.

It was in the 1960s that the term tequeño became popular, thanks to distributors who traveled by train from Los Teques to Caracas. When they arrived at the terminal, people would shout: “The tequeños are here!” And so, this appetizer became famous... so much so that today it is known around the world. On April 21, 2023, the tequeño was declared a Cultural Heritage of Venezuela.

How did #InternationalTequeñoDay come about?

The initiative was launched in 2021 by Rafael Mourad and Tania Rimer, directors of the organization Hecho por Venezolanos, with the aim of promoting our cuisine and supporting Venezuelan entrepreneurship abroad. October 21, the date of the founding of Los Teques, was chosen as a tribute to its place of origin.

Now in its fifth year, the celebration revolves around the journey of the tequeño: from Los Teques to the world. That's why October has become #TequeñoMonth, and we can all participate. How? Through various activities:

➡️ If you have a business, organize promotions, contests, tastings, or discounts.

➡️ Invite your family, friends, and people of other nationalities to enjoy an afternoon of tequeños. Discover how this snack becomes a cultural bridge!

From tequeño to arepa: two ambassadors that conquered the world

Yes, just as our arepa became the ambassador of Venezuelan cuisine around the world, the tequeño also conquered hearts and today can be found in more than 80 countries, present in arepa restaurants, food trucks, food fairs, and festivals around the globe.

Arepas are sometimes used as appetizers or snacks to share at gatherings. You can organize an afternoon of tequeños and arepas with your family, friends, and foreign community. I recommend looking up the recipe for sweet arepitas in the book and filling them with grated cheese. They are a perfect duo! A perfect afternoon!
