Triple Slovenia beers

avatar

I've never tried Slovenia beers before. It's not like they're commonly available in our local supermarkets like the Belgian or Czechia beers. When we travel, we, or rather hubs always like to try out the local beer scene. Afterall, that's part of the travel experience. On our only evening in Ljubljana we ordered a couple of local Slovenian beers with our dinner.

The 3rd Pill

The 3rd Pill came highly recommended by the restaurant waiter and I can understand why. It's very nice, and that's coming from someone who doesn't drink much. It's a 6% American IPA made with 4 different types of malt and 4 different types of hops.

I noticed there's a lot of bubbles in the beer when poured out, almost like a fizzy drink, and it had a good head, which I'm told is good. This was hubs beer, and I tried a sip. It had a lovely aroma, with a hint of fruity flavour but I couldn't work out specifically what fruit.

The label and brand design is very minimalistic. If they removed the references for beer, it could have been any drink, fruit juice, energy drink, health drink or even coffee!

Mitzi

After trying the 3rd Pill, I tried my own beer, a 4.5% IPA craft beer called Mitzi. Hubs ordered this for me because of it's lower alcohol content. Damn! I wished I tried this before the 3rd Pill! Mitzi was nice, but after trying 3rd Pill that was very nice, this was just ok nice.

When you compare the two, the colour of the Mitzi is not as golden, and looks a bit more cloudy. Also, the beer head is obviously smaller.

Don't get me wrong, the Mitzi is an ok beer, but nothing too special about it, and not one I'd be rushing out to order again.

Union Radler

Unlike the Union Radler, we did order this a couple of times and even bought a couple of cans back to our Airbnb to drink in the evening. The Union Radler is a grapefruit and orange flavour beer, and was very refreshing. It's similar to a shandy which is beer mixed with lemonade but I'm not a fan of that. The Radler is a lot nicer, and since it only has 2% alcohol, it was very easy to drink and great for the hot summer evenings when we were in Slovenia.

After Ljubljana, we went to Bled for a couple of days. There was this lovely restaurant by the lake (pretty much everything is by the lake) and it had some tables upstairs on the balcony facing the lake. The sun was still burning hot at dinner time, perfect for another Union Radler.

I don't think Radler is very common in the UK, not that I've been actively looking for them. I will now, and hopefully I will find one that I will like so it can remind me if the nice time I had in Slovenia.

"Union Radler is a grapefruit and orange flavour beer, and was very refreshing."

That sounds rather intriguing! I'm not a big beer drinker, but that's something I'd like to try sometime!

I'm wondering if other brands will taste the same or if I can recreate it myself at home, it will certainly be very nice for summer

Next time, try Laško beer! ;) Union and Laško are the most famous brands in our country, and people are actually divided into two teams… the Laško team and the Union team. 😂Tell me, how do you like Slovenia? 😊

the Laško team and the Union team

Which camp are you in ? 😉

Tell me, how do you like Slovenia? 😊

This where I'm supposed to be very polite and tell you how much I love your country 😁

To be very honest, I was in Ljubljana for 36 hours and probably stayed within a 2km radius so didn't get to see much. I have always wanted to go to Bled and it didn't disappoint, I'm very glad I did the detour before Graz.

I’m on the team both! 😂 I'm still not sure why this has become such a big drama because, honestly, they both taste the same to me. 😂😂 By the way, Bled is beautiful, but if you ever go back to Slovenia, I recommend visiting Bohinj as well! 😉

It's too bad that Mitzi didn't taste a little better for you. The label is so cool. I probably would have selected that one based on the marketing 😆
If only you hadn't tried the 3rd pill first!

I notice many craft beers are getting very creative with their labels, and often I choose my beer based in that as well!

Often there isn't much else you can go by either.

A true summer refreshment.. Maybe try Union beer, first and only non-alcoholic Slovenian beer, @livinguktaiwan? I like its label.

Beer style: Non-alcoholic pale lager
"The pleasant harmony of the hoppy bitterness and the fruity aroma gives it a pleasant and refreshing character".

All the best everyone! 🙂

The killer robots on the label would have got me in for the Mitzi

You know, before I put this post up and the comment from yourself and @leaky20 , I hadn't actually noticed the label 😅

I like to agree with your beer posts, and it is that you and your husband enjoy it very much. Besides the beauty of the country is another great memory that remains with them. Happy weekend!...

I think any beer drunk by such a beautiful backdrop of lakes and mountains would taste good.

coming from someone who doesn't drink much.

...is not the impression you give, considering all the posts you've written about alcohol!

we went to Bled for a couple of days.

So after you got wrecked on beer, you began making typos and decided to tell us what you really get up to on your holidays ;-)

Hope you're having a great weekend and the garden continues to thrive.

Sometimes I go through the whiskey community and see that I do tend to post quite a lot there 😉. Hubs have quite a few more bottles that I haven't got round to post yet. Watch out!!

The Radler is the one that cyclists drink because of its low alcohol content... but give me the 3rd Pill! I think if I'm going to drink lemon juice or orange juice I just buy that and that's it.
In addition to Spanish you should practice in beer...hahaha...I'll practice in whiskey. 😜

Really enjoyed this fun little beer tour! Your descriptions made me want to try all three Slovenian brews! It’s amazing how you captured their unique flavors and gave a genuine vibe of the local beer scene.
Cheers to discovering new favorites!!

That's part of the fun, trying the local beers especially since they're not available at home.

Cheers! Yeah, Pelicon and Tektonik are two of the well-known craft breweries in Slovenia. Their beers rate high in Ratebeer and Untappd. Union Radler is, how to say, just radler, but OK. It's nice to visit Bled, maybe it's too touristy. If you come again, go to Lake Bohinj, about 15 kilometres further, it's more peaceful and cleaner, less tourists :)

I loved reading about your Slovenian beer-tasting adventure, it honestly felt like I was right there in Ljubljana with you! I’ve never tried Slovenian beers either, so this was a great introduction. The 3rd Pill sounds like a total standout, and the way you described the bubbles and aroma, just wow. I get what you mean about trying a stronger beer first, which makes the next one feel a bit “meh” even if it’s decent. 🍻 Cheers-ing with my bubbly beer.
