knOt 2.0 | Sailor Community Initiative
⛵ Setting a New Course?
This account—dormant for seven years—missed out on so much great content and sailors who passed by—never finding a place to dock. Many said goodbye, but those with strong bonds stayed on the platform. Who knows, some might still return, and new sailors are bound to find their way onto Hive.
⚓️ Why the Inactivity?
For a while I wasn't sure if I should try to revive this initiative for several reasons:
- First of all, I haven't sailed in over 5 years, and have lost some of the previous confidence I had to call myself a sailor.
After moving to from Miami to Ecuador—and with Covid—sailing became out of reach.
I also don't know any other sailors, let alone captains with sailboats who need crew members.
Another setback is that I now have to relearn all the terminology, this time in Spanish—an achievable goal, but without sailing opportunities on the horizon, I just haven’t been motivated enough.
- Second reason was Work. When the bull-market ended back in 2018, many left crypto and the activity—then on Steem—started to dry out. Those of us who didn't escape with a considerable loot had to find jobs and return to the fiat world. Even now that I'm getting myself more and more back into Hive, and I work from our half-constructed home, I still have projects and deadlines to meet.
Still, as Charles Buxton said:
“You will never 'find' time. You must make it.”
I know, right?—Captain obvious—but a captain non the less.
But this is by no means a sob story—I'm very happy with my life—Living in paradise, building our dream home from scratch, raising 4 adorable puppers, riding our horses, doing archery, teaching astronomy, making new friends, hiking and challenging myself at every chance I get. Its just that...
🔭 A Glimpse into the Past...
There is an idealized version of me somewhere to the starboard of my ego— fearless adrenaline junkie, flying above water at 20+ knots on an International Moth... And nothing else matters 🌊 I can see it...
But that's called "a do-over fantasy", and in reality sailing was something I tried once in my 20's on a whim, and didn't really embraced it properly until I was in my 30's.
I did most of my sailing between 2016 - 2020. I participated in every regatta that my captain friends called me for, sometimes sailing solo for hours to our race destination while the Capt. rested. I helped a few newbie liveaboards to take out their boat for practice, refuel and maintenance. With a crew of 4—including my husband and I—we helped transport a 35 footer down the Indian River in FL, and the list goes on.
Bottom line is that I took every opportunity that came, and my sailing enthusiasm grew with every experience gained. I wanted to share this passion here by opening a portal for sailing content—and that is how @knOt was born.
...a Vision Moving Forward ⛵️
I don't know when I'm going to call myself a sailor again... But seeing other prominent sailor Hiveans like @zekepickleman, who also did't sail for over 5 years (until this summer that is), told me that I wasn't the only one 'stranded'. Now, some invisible force is drawing me back to this project. I wish to restore @knOt's spirit and re-establish the initiative to help sailors find each other's content. I want to see them thrive and inspired readers to pick-up sailing as a lifestyle.
So Yes, @knOt is back! 🤘
And my first task to get this place re-launched, is to:
🔎 Find all active sailors on Hive and introduce them in a post. If YOU are one, please let me know in the comments.
✍️ Launch a weekly curation project — that will spotlight all the best sailing and sailing-adjacent content.
🌍 Start a maritime-themed geo-quiz—A weekly challenge open to all Hiveans—and especially fun for well-traveled sailors familiar with the world’s coastlines and shores.
Future Plans
As this community continues to grow, there will be more contests to boost engagement, and other initiatives that are still on the drawing table.

Haha YES!
Some of my earliest Steemit memories were meeting an awesome group of international sailors from brand new to seasoned seafarers and every thing in between. I remember snapping pics and posting #sailingsunday post to tell the tale.
Covid really did screw sailing up as we weren’t allowed go gather a crew and share a boat. That and a bit of the money dried up and I am told the yacht clubs are still very far from the same.
So glad to be starting sailing again on a new boat we have to learn all over again in order to competitively race. Also glad to see such an old friend back!
You don’t have to sail America’s Cup to wave the sailing flag here! Just have a passion and love the community.
Welcome back and let’s put the old crew back together again!
I know @novacadian sails!
Right on! You played a big role in inspiring this resurrections, so Cheers 🍻 to that! Love the photos - the sail looks crisp new, congrats on obtaining a new boat and going out there!
It's great to see the old crew emerging from below deck and happy to be part of it. It had sailed under my radar pre-covid having turned to landlubbing for decades. :)
hah! 😁🤙
I'm not a sailor, but there must be more on Hive. We need to build communities around different interests.
!BEER
I agree! Your passion for something is bound to find company!

I’m not a sailor … but I’m in my kayak each day.
Maybe I should start a Hive Kayaker club ….
That's a great idea! I actually love kayaking, and have some crazy stories about my adventures kayaking in FL.
I'm pretty sure that we sailors, and you kayakers have a lot in common!
We have some pretty wild stories from our kayak adventures on Lake Superior…. In the waves and fog
Have you encountered any Sharks down there ?
This is a video my kids made a few summer ago :

LOL! Well that sent me Googling for sharks in Lake Superior. Looks like its your local underwater-urban-legend.
I never encountered sharks, but Alligators yes.
and in Sailing, a group of Dolphins, sea turtles, and flying-fish
Supposedly we get Bull Sharks here on the St Lawrence Seaway …. We kayak there quite a bit too.
Those are quite aggressive, hope you stay safe, and maybe get carry some Rambo knife 😜
Btw, kudos to the kids - they got some story-telling and editing talent!
Yeah . It’s pretty much their YouTube Channel now . They are having some fun with AI …. Making Sasquatch and Creature from the black Lagoon movies … YouTube and Blurt pays for their University Tuition

haha! thats awesome!
Yes, Hive is in real need of an active sailing community.
Happy to be part of the community.
Thank you!
Steps are underway to making it happen.
And in the meantime, feel free to scroll through the re-blogs on @knot to connect with the other sailors.
Sailing is one of those things you can come back to at any age.
You are still young.
I sailed as a kid for school sport and then as a passenger on other boats as a young adult then not for 25 year before buying a catamaran and sailing the length of the Med with 3 little kids onboard for half the time.
I have a few questions:
💯! then welcome to @knOt!!
We moved to Ecuador to have the freedom to build our dream home, to have a more interesting terrain for hiking. Its also better for mental health - living in the US with the way politics are going is very stressful.
'Puppers' is a term of endearment we use for 'doggies'

Nice idea ! I often have a look to see what Hivers propose on purpose of sailing, but hard to find !! I created by the past @maesha to tell my life onboard, but finally I let it due to low participation. on the platform. I write an article sometimes on my personnal account. Nice idea again, I will participate to this community, and let see!
hi there! thank you!! and welcome aboard! I will be posting a new community announcement this week, please stay tuned.
