THE HUSTLE

The reason why a lot of people strive to work abroad from my country is because there is very little opportunity here. I was speaking with my partner about the availability of jobs here and it was interesting to know that for every 1 job post available, there are at least 100 applicants looking to get it. When only one applicant get;s the job it does not mean that there are 99 people without jobs because for that position to be available, it means one person has lost a job and thus people without a job still is around 100. This statistic is even worse in real life and it is the reason why everyone tends to hold on to a job even though the pay is little.

I like to sometimes engage cab drivers in conversation, and it’s usually shocking to find out that a lot of them are not just 1st class graduates, some even have masters and PHDs but the situation of jobs in the country has left them no choice but to do something to provide for their families. Some are even willing to take the low paying jobs but the companies usually reject them on the bases that they are over qualified for the job which is really sad. Imagine not being able to get a job because the company feels they can not pay you and those who can will not employ you.

Getting jobs here requires a hell of luck and connections. Those without these two are often at a disadvantage and it’s sad that the rate of people in this position is very high. Imagine looking for a job for more than 10 years and when you finally get one the company looks at you as too old even though you have the right qualifications. The continuity of this is what has made a lot of people give up on applying for jobs and instead look for ways to create some. Now when they create jobs which are supposed to reduce unemployment rate their pay tends to be below minimum wage because they are just hustling and do not have the financial capacity to pay a lot.

What a lovely piece...
And of a truth, it's really saddening to see a lot of graduates doing menial jobs just so they could survive. The system is indeed bad, there's absolutely nothing for the average Nigerian than to just keep struggling and toiling in other to stay afloat.

Thanks for sharing.
