THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Looking back in time, It is safe to say that I have had my own share of unforgettable great moments in the little time I have been privileged to live in this world. I know what it means to be so happy because of how much I enjoyed the season and how fulfilled I was about it. I think I have shared some of these stories in my blog in the past, but in this post I will be sharing two occasions when the holiday season like this was one of the biggest moments of my life. One was when I was young, and the other was when I was an adult. Now that I think back I can only laugh at the things that made me marvel then, these were things that meant the world to me, but now I would pass without thinking about them twice. I think it is one of the things adulthood does to a person and now that I am grown I understand why my parents weren’t too enthusiastic about those things.

One of these moments is what I call my miracle moment as a child. Then wearing christmas clothes was a big deal, I mean every child was looking to wear their new clothes to church and compare with the fellow kids around. The set of clothes, shoes, wrist watch and glasses was always something to dream of and when I look back now, it is just funny how silly my mentality was. Because it was a big deal, I became so sad when my dad had a lot of problems and couldn’t afford to get anything for me and my sister that Christmas. We could barely afford to eat so no one was even thinking about Christmas clothes. But then on the morning of Christmas I heard my mum screaming in the sitting room only to come out to discover my dad just got a huge contract and had even come with our Christmas clothes and was giving my mum money for rice and chicken. To be honest an 11 year old me did not even care that my dad got a huge contract, my joy was in my new clothes and the thought of showing off.

It was a really big deal for me then and still remains an unforgettable moment in my life. Another moment was when I got to perform live on stage for the first time as a theater artist in the presence of over 5000 audience and distinguished guests in different levels of government. It was my second time on stage, and the first time I was acting a major role. It was a major role as a supporting actor, but my excitement was that it was going to be the first of many major roles. On Sunday I will be acting again, but then I will be doing it remembering how I started. Today I act as the main lead because my director gave me an opportunity to feature as a supporting character that day and when I think back I am still super excited about it.

The story of the Christmas "miracle" is simple, but it works well to show how our priorities change over time.
