BEHIND THE SCENES

I’ve once formed a deep friendship with an anonymous person on hive. This person was so anonymous that the only reason I believed she was a lady was because she said so. If she had said she was a guy I would have also believed lol. But later on I think she had issues with hive watchers as she was traced to having multiple accounts. But even with all the issues, she quietly left because she would rather keep her identity anonymous than just to clarify any misconceptions about her which I also find weird. It made me wonder what was so peculiar about her identity that made her go through the pain of leaving hive instead of just confirming her identity. I concluded that perhaps there was some truth to the accusation leveled against her, or perhaps there is more to it than she is letting on and we do not just know. Either way, we can never know because she has chosen to be anonymous.

I do believe it is possible to be anonymous in this time and age, in fact it is possible to make tons of money from being anonymous. One of the things I am intrigued to learn is faceless marketing. I know a few who have accounts on web 2 social media monetization space and are making a lot of money from it. I think there are times when no one would care who you are, so long as they enjoy your content. The idea here is to be known for something, it could be a character, a language, and attitude or anything that speaks to people and when you can do that, you find out that it is easy to just stay anonymous and be known at the same time, For example the identity of “Satoshi Nakamoto” who is known as the creator of bitcoin still has some speculations about his true identity as some still believe that the man we see in the pictures is not him.No one talks about it again, or none that I know of, but bitcoin has risen so high over the years. What if he is truly not the man in the picture, it means we will never know him but his creation is legendary.

This also means that the criteria to be anonymous is to have a face people can relate with, and at the same time, have something they are interested in. I know a particular billionaire in Nigeria who has zero online presence. Many know his name, his companies, but very few have seen his face. In fact his children currently hold high government positions in both the state and federal government, yet he is not physically known. He rarely attends public gatherings, and when he does no news channel or photographer is allowed to take pictures of him. I was at an event with a friend when I saw some security operatives harassing a photographer for taking pictures. His camera was broken on the spot and he was given money more than his camera worth to replace it. When we inquired what happened, it turned out that a particular person was in the gathering and he took a picture of him without realizing it. Blogs and news channels have been closed a lot of times for making news about him, I guess he just has the money to remain anonymous.

Yes, I think it's possible to be anonymous is our digital world. What such a person wants to show, is what they will. And they can take measures even to ensure their identity is kept anonymous.
