A COSTLY MISTAKE

I remember a time when I would usually boast of how much of a retentive memory I had. I would boast about the level of things I could retain. This is a guy who would crame up to three textbooks before an exam and download everything without missing a full stop. That’s how good I am, but then again, even the best of us forgets things at times and what's worse, we can forget them at the most crucial time. I recently forgot a crucial detail at my place of work and I remember talking about it here when a similar prompt came some months back, and I have been paying dearly for that forgetfulness up to this point. It’s a very heartbreaking story to me because that little moment of forgetfulness is costing me my peace of mind above all things. So without further ado, here’s my story.

I started working with my company as a digital marketer with a bit of IT experience, it wasn’t easy because I was just coming out of a whole lot of stuff, but that is a story for another day. After my company hired me, I discovered their website was a mess and decided to add my two cents solution which automatically made me double my role as the company’s ICT personnel. But I haven’t had as much experience with ICT as I have had with digital marketing and I made that very clear to the management which they knew and still decided to give me the position. I was doing very well until I made a mistake that would have cost me my job if the company got to know. Oh yeah I couldn’t bring myself to tell them that I forgot that I had activated a plan for them and activated it again which meant they will be paying double of what they had paid for the host fee. Oh sorry, I meant to say triple because the plan I reactivated was a higher plan.

That day was like every other day at the office, busy with so many departments calling me to report one thing or another. I think that is the thing I hate most about my job. If it isn’t their intercom that is malfunctioning, it is their laptop or desktop having an issue. If it is not that, it is the data that isn’t working well on their side of the building, if it is not that, it is the server having a downtime and they need me to perform some magic to make it work. If it is not, it is the lazy staff wanting me to come to their office to check why the mail the sent did not send or why their laptop hung for two minutes before responding… This is my everyday life at the office and imagine building a website as a newbie while facing all these things.

So yeah that day was a day like this when all these things were happening and I was attending meetings on meetings until I was called in the process of trying to activate the hosting plan I had pressured my company to buy to give them more email space and make a lot of server related processes much easier. I had activated the plan but didn’t close the tab when my attention was called that day, only for me to come back and purchase another plan. Now I didn’t even realize my mistake until the next day when I got an invoice from the hosting company telling me that I had paid part payment of my hosting plan and would be charged $25 monthly to cover the rest until september. It was at that moment I realized that I was $315 indebted and I have been paying it and would be paying it until September this year.

$315!!! This is a very costly mistake.
And you have been paying the debt!!! Ah this must have been tough on you. I don't know much about ICT stuff, can't you just cancel the plan?

Cancling is not an option, It's like buying a house and rebuying another one in the same land, you must pay for both
