The bad step mother stereotype is getting old, western pop culture does such a dis-service portraying in-laws as evil. There are no manuals or official job description for this job. I say it depends on the spouse my son selects. With clear agreeable, clear boundary in place, I could be her best friend or not, depending on her attitude and expectations of their marriage.
The goal is as you mentioned, A (my insertion)lasting good, kind and loving relationship.
