Phone Photography Contest #103 - Cumaná Cathedral Church
In the heart of the city of Cumaná (Sucre, Venezuela), the oldest city on the American continent, stands the Cathedral of Cumaná or Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Built in the neoclassical style, it was rebuilt in 1936 after being destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1929.
It is a beautiful Catholic temple, almost entirely covered in wood and with attractive altarpieces that imitate those of colonial times, with their characteristic golden color and allusive images painted or modeled in stucco. It is very spacious, both in width and length. It has many sculptural images of the Virgin Mary and various saints, as well as beautiful stained glass windows. There are also symbolic tiles on the floor.
But perhaps the most striking feature is the large lamps hanging from the ceiling (“chandeliers,” as they are called).
I took some new photos with my cell phone on my last visit a few days ago. Here are three of them with different perspectives.
